Early Life
Carvalho, who was born in Luanda, emigrated to Portugal when he was a little child. Both his uncle Afonso and his grandpa Praia were football players who competed for the Angolan team Progresso Associaço do Sambizanga.
Club Career
Sporting CP
Carvalho first began playing in the streets after relocating to Portugal, and Recreios Desportivos de Algueiro finally hired him. He joined Unio Sport Clube de Mira Sintra in 2004, where he was the side’s youngest player and captain.
He joined Sporting CP’s junior system at age 13, and on April 3, 2011, he made his official debut with the first team by playing in extra time during a 1-1 away tie with Vitória S.C. in the Primeira Liga before being loaned to C.D. for six months. Fátima is in division three.
Carvalho, who was still under contract to the Lisbon team, spent one and a half seasons on loan with Cercle Brugge K.S.V. in the Belgian Pro League beginning in January 2012. He played alongside several Sporting teammates who were there on the same basis. His first goal as a professional came on April 7 in a 6-4 home victory over Oud-Heverlee Leuven. A year later, he assisted the team to the Belgian Cup final.
For the 2013–14 season, Carvalho made a comeback, serving as a defensive rock for newly hired manager Leonardo Jardim. On October 27, he scored his first goal for the team, netting the 1–1 equalizer in a 3–1 loss against FC Porto.
Sporting only fully acquired Carvalho’s rights in November 2014, with third-party ownership complicating any potential trade. The following summer, he attracted the interest of numerous European teams, with Arsenal having their bid of £13 million plus Joel Campbell rejected.
Betis
The club paid €16 million plus €4 million in variable expenses for 75% of the player’s rights, with €10 million more to come later for a further 20% of his rights based on specific terms and accomplishments. On July 13, 2018, Carvalho signed a five-year deal with Real Betis. On August 17, he played 65 minutes in a 0-3 home loss against Levante UD to make his La Liga debut.
In the 25th minute of a 1-1 home tie with Getafe CF on September 15, 2019, Carvalho was dismissed from the game. Days later, he had a spinal disc herniation and was sidelined until February. He only played 13 games that season and was subsequently linked with Leicester City.
On September 20, 2020, Carvalho scored his first goal for the Verdiblancos in a 2-0 home loss to Real Valladolid. Six days later, at the same venue (Estadio Benito Villamarin), he added another goal. Carvalho consented to an extension through September 2026.
International Career
Carvalho, who was qualified to represent both Portugal and Angola, decided on the former. The Angolan Football Federation attempted to call him up when he was still playing for Portugal’s under-20 team but was unsuccessful.
On October 15, 2012, Carvalho made his under-21 team debut against Ukraine in a friendly match that ended 0-1. During the 2015 UEFA European Championship qualifying matches, Carvalho scored twice in victories at home against Israel (3-0) and Norway (5-1).
For the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying play-offs against Sweden, Carvalho was initially called up by full-side manager Paulo Bento in November 2013. He earned his first cap in the second leg on the 19th, entering the game as a 73rd-minute replacement in a 3-2 away victory (4-2 aggregate).
