Sam Morsy, a professional football player for Ipswich Town of the EFL League One, was born on September 10, 1991. He plays defensive midfield and serves as the club’s captain. He represents the national team of Egypt and was born in England. He was released from the Wolverhampton Wanderers Academy in 2008, at which point he joined the Port Vale youth programme. In the summer of 2010, after winning his debut, he went professional with the club. In 2010–11, he made a name for himself as a member of the first team, and two years later, he received a contract. In 2012–13, he assisted the team in being promoted from League Two.

He joined Chesterfield in July 2013 and participated for the team in the 2014 Football League Trophy final, which helped the team win League Two in the 2013–14 season. He was acquired by Wigan Athletic in January 2016 and contributed to the team’s 2015–16 League One championship. When he returned to Wigan after joining Barnsley on loan in August 2016, the team had already been demoted from the Championship. He rose to prominence among the first team members as they successfully defended their League One championship in 2017–18, ensuring their quick readmission. He was selected as Wigan’s Player of the Year for the 2019–20 season and joined Middlesbrough in September 2020 when the club went through financial difficulties and was demoted.

Club Career

Chesterfield

Because Morsy was under the age of 24, Chesterfield offered him a two-year contract in July 2013, after a fee had been resolved with Port Vale. When we learned that he could be available, we “worked heaven and earth to bring him here,” according to manager Paul Cook.

He participated in the Football League Trophy final between Chesterfield and Peterborough United on March 30, 2014, at Wembley Stadium. He assisted Eoin Doyle’s goal following “a strong run into the Posh area.”

In 2013–14, he participated in 39 games as Chesterfield achieved promotion as divisional winners, and at the conclusion of the season, he was chosen as the team’s Player of the Year.

He led Chesterfield to the League One Playoffs in 2014–15, and Russell Slade, the manager of Cardiff City, was reportedly interested in signing him in the summer. Chesterfield also rejected a £400,000 proposal from Milton Keynes Dons.

Wigan Athletic

After being sold for an undisclosed sum (later rumored to be £200,000 plus a 10% sell-on clause for any profit Wigan may gain on his future transfer), Morsy signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with Wigan Athletic on January 28, 2016.

On February 20, he “pulled all the strings” in a 2-1 victory against Walsall, earning him a spot on the Football League team of the week. On March 25, against Swindon Town, Wigan defeated them 4-1, and he scored his first goal for the team. Wigan eventually won League One’s promotion as the 2015–16 season’s top team.

He signed up with Barnsley on loan on August 31, 2016, for the remainder of the 2016–17 campaign.

When the loan agreement’s release clause was activated by then-new Wigan manager Warren Joyce in January 2017, he was doubtful about his chances of keeping Morsy at the DW Stadium because former manager Gary Caldwell had agreed to a provision that allowed Barnsley to buy Morsy for a predetermined price after the loan’s expiration. On January 16, Morsy came back to Wigan and agreed to a one-year contract extension.

Middlesbrough

Morsy, who signed a three-year deal with Middlesbrough on September 11, 2020, became manager Neil Warnock’s third summer addition. Four days later, in an EFL Cup loss to Barnsley, he made his debut at the Riverside Stadium.

First-team coach Ronnie Jepson stated of Morsy’s performance after the game, “He will give us another edge.” He was sent on December 16 during a 1-0 victory against Luton Town at home for handling the ball, however Warnock claimed he would challenge the dismissal. On March 6, against Swansea City, Middlesbrough lost 2-1 and he scored his first goal for the team.

He was only able to make 32 appearances in the 2020–21 season due to injuries, but his solid play still earned him a 7–out–of 10 rating in TeessideLive’s season review. In his final game for “Boro,” a 1-1 tie with Blackburn Rovers on August 28, 2021, he received a red card.

Ipswich Town

Morsy signed a three-year contract with League One club Ipswich Town on August 31, 2021, for an unknown cost. He was the “Tractor Boys” 19th signing of the summer transfer window, and it was his third time playing for manager Paul Cook. In October 2021, he was appointed club captain.

On March 5, he scored his first goal for Ipswich, opening the scoring in a 2-0 victory over Fleetwood Town on the road. Later that month, the new manager Kieran McKenna indicated that he and Morsy were getting along well. Morsy was told by McKenna to advance and score more goals. Although he stayed with the team, he was linked to a transfer return to the Championship in the summer.

International Career

Because his father is Egyptian, Morsy, who was born in England, is entitled to represent Egypt. On August 30, 2016, he made his debut for his country after replacing Mostafa Fathi at halftime of a friendly game against Guinea at the Borg El Arab Stadium that ended in a 1-1 tie. He sat on the sidelines as Egypt defeated the Congo 2-1 to earn a spot in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

He was included in Héctor Cper’s 23-man roster for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia in June of that year. In the opening match of the group stage on June 15, he made his FIFA World Cup debut by replacing the injured Tarek Hamed 50 minutes into a 1-0 loss to Uruguay.

In September 2021, he was invited back into the national team for matches against Libya in Cairo and Benghazi that served as World Cup qualifiers. Nevertheless, he wasn’t included in the final team. In May 2022, he was included in a preliminary squad, but he was once more left off the final roster.
