Club Career
Caen
Guerreiro, who was raised by a Portuguese father and a French mother and was born in Le Blanc-Mesnil, Seine-Saint-Denis, played youth football for three different teams before completing his development at Stade Malherbe Caen, where he signed in 2008 at the age of 14.
He made his professional debut in the 2012–13 season after beginning as a senior with the reserve squad, playing in all games and failing to start only once in an eventual fourth-place finish in Ligue 2. He was also chosen for the Team of the Year.
Lorient
Guerreiro joined Ligue 1 on June 27, 2013, after agreeing to a four-year deal with FC Lorient. On August 10, he made his first appearance in the league, playing the full 90 minutes in a 1-0 road loss to Lille OSC.
Guerreiro scored his first goal for Lorient on November 1, 2014, against league leaders Paris Saint-Germain F.C., however the match ended in a 2-1 loss.
In order to keep his side from being relegated, he scored seven goals throughout the course of the season, including the equaliser as they overcame a deficit to upset his previous employers 2-1 at the Stade du Moustoir.
Borussia Dortmund
Guerreiro signed a four-year deal with Borussia Dortmund on June 16, 2016, reportedly for a sum of €12 million (£9.5 million). He was mostly used as a midfielder under Thomas Tuchel’s coaching.
On September 14, 2016, Guerreiro scored his first goal in the UEFA Champions League during a 6-0 road victory against Legia Warsaw in the group stage.
At that point of the competition’s 2018–19 season, he also scored twice in victories over AS Monaco FC and Atlético Madrid (both 4-0 at home) (2–0).
International Career
After being seen by Rui Jorge’s coaching staff, Guerreiro agreed to play for Portugal’s under-21 squad. He made his debut on March 21, 2013, in a 0-1 loss at home to Sweden. Fernando Santos summoned him up to the full squad on November 7, 2014, despite the fact that he scarcely understood the language for a UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying match against Armenia and a friendly against Argentina.
He played the full 1-0 victory in Faro on November 14 against the old foe. In the last seconds of the match against Argentina four days later at Old Trafford, he scored the lone goal.
Guerreiro returned to the under-21s for the 2015 UEFA European Championship in the Czech Republic, helping them finish in second place.
He was one of the five Portuguese players who made up the tournament team. Guerreiro was chosen for the main squad’s Euro 2016 campaign, and he participated in Saint-1-1 Étienne’s draw with Iceland in the tournament’s first match for the entire 90 minutes.
Following his achievements throughout the campaign, he was nominated for the Young Player of the Tournament Award, which ultimately went to his teammate Renato Sanches. Portugal went on to win the championship, defeating hosts France 1-0 in the final in extra time.
