Club Career

Sporting

Although Moutinho was born in Barreiro, Setbal District, he was born and raised in Portimo, Algarve. When he was a young player for Portimonense SC, he had a lot of potentials, and at the age of 13, he joined Sporting Clube de Portugal in Lisbon to continue his football training.

At just 17 years old, Moutinho was called up to the main team by manager José Peseiro during the 2004–05 preseason. He later went back to the Paulo Bento-coached junior squad, though, and played with players like Miguel Veloso and Nani to help the team win the national championship that year.

Porto

With a transfer fee of €11 million (€1 million was paid for 50% of the rights to center-back Nuno André Coelho) and a five-year contract, Moutinho signed with FC Porto on July 3, 2010, Sporting would also receive 25% of any added value, provided it increased over the prior value.

“The agreement was done because Sporting wanted it. It did not want bad fruit in its orchard. It did not want someone who was not an example and did not dignify the flag of the club,” Sporting Chairman José Eduardo Bettencourt said of Moutinho’s behavior.

Monaco

On May 24, 2013, it was revealed that Moutinho and James Rodrguez had both signed for AS Monaco FC for a reported combined sum of about €70 million (€25 million for Moutinho). On September 1, he made his formal debut for his new team, starting and assisting on both goals in a 2-1 victory against Olympique de Marseille that sent them to the top of Ligue 1.

In his first season, Moutinho was the side’s first-choice player as the principality team finished runners-up and advanced directly out of Ligue 2. On September 29, he scored just once, tying the score in a 1-1 away tie with Stade de Reims.

Moutinho scored the lone goal in Monaco’s 1-0 victory over Bayer at home on September 16, 2014—the club’s first Champions League game since 2005.

Wolverhampton Wanderers

On July 24, 2018, Moutinho signed a two-year contract with Wolverhampton Wanderers, an English team that had just been promoted, for an unknown sum that was reportedly about £5 million. On August 11th, he played 85 minutes in a 2-2 home draw against Everton to make his Premier League debut. On September 22, during a 1-1 draw away to Manchester United, he scored his first goal of the tournament from just beyond the area with his weaker left foot.

At the completion of his debut season, Moutinho was selected by Wolverhampton supporters as Player of the Season. He participated in all 38 league games during that time and made an additional six appearances during their FA Cup run to the semi-final, their first since 1997–98.

International Career

In a 2-0 home friendly victory against Egypt in Ponta Delgada on August 17, 2005, Moutinho earned his debut as a full member of the Portugal national team at the age of 18. He started receiving regular calls from the team after the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

At Estádio do Fontelo in Viseu on May 31, 2008, Moutinho scored his first goal for the national team in a 2-0 friendly victory against Georgia. He was chosen for the 23-man team for UEFA Euro 2008, and in the tournament’s first match, he helped Raul Meireles score in a 2-0 victory over Turkey.

While the Portuguese were eliminated in the group stage in both of his appearances at the UEFA European Under-21 Championships, Moutinho scored against Germany in the 2006 edition, which was played at home. In addition, despite not being included in the preliminary 24-player list for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, he was listed in a backup list of six players.

At the 2012 Euro tournament, Moutinho participated in all of the contests and minutes. He failed to score in the penalty shootout against Spain in the semifinals, which resulted in a 2-4 defeat (0–0 after 120 minutes).

Moutinho was chosen by former Sporting manager Bento for the 2014 World Cup, making his tournament debut on June 16 in an 0-4 loss to Germany in the group stage.

In order to guarantee Portugal’s qualifying for Euro 2016, he scored the game-winning goal against Denmark on October 8 at the Estádio Municipal de Braga. Three days later, his side overcame Serbia 2-1 to clinch first place in their group.

Fernando Santos selected Moutinho for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup team after the player made six out of a possible seven appearances to assist his country win the European Championships for the first time ever. He earned his 100th cap in the latter competition’s last group stage match against New Zealand in Saint Petersburg, when he played the entire 90 minutes as England defeated them 4-0.
