Joel Campbell Personal Life

The son of Roxana Samuels and Humberto Campbell, Joel Campbell is of Jamaican origin. He is dating Maria Fernanda Cascante. Nekisha, Humberto, and Katherine are the names of three of his siblings. Campbell holds a firm faith in Christ.

He claims that after God, his family is the second most important aspect of his life. Additionally, before each game, Campbell recites Psalm 27.

Club Career

Saprissa

Campbell’s career began with Saprissa in 2009, and in January 2011, he was loaned to Puntarenas. According to a report on Costa Rican television on July 28, 2011, Campbell signed a contract with Arsenal after being spotted by club scout Danny Karbassiyoon.

Campbell later acknowledged that although he had not yet signed, discussions were ongoing. After turning down offers from Sevilla and Fiorentina, Campbell was reportedly close to signing a five-year contract with Arsenal on August 6. Campbell claims that Alex Ferguson of Manchester United also contacted him with the intention of placing him under Ryan Giggs’ tutelage.

Arsenal

Campbell was officially signed by Arsenal on August 19, 2011, however, it was revealed eight days later that he had been unable to secure a work visa that would have allowed him to compete in England. In July 2013, Campbell finally acquired the license.

Loan to Lorient

Campbell and Gilles Sunu both joined the French club Lorient after being unable to get work permits in their native England, with Campbell going on loan and Sunu going on a permanent basis. In the 1-1 draw away at Sochaux, he made his Lorient debut in the 79th minute as a replacement for Grégory Bourillon, setting up Innocent Emeghara’s goal and earning Lorient a point on the road.

In a 2-0 victory over Valenciennes on October 1, Campbell scored his first goal for Lorient. His right-footed drive reached the bottom left corner of the net. Campbell scored his second goal for Lorient on October 26 against Montpellier in a Coupe de la Ligue game.

Loan to Real Betis

Campbell signed a season-long loan with La Liga team Real Betis on July 6, 2012. On August 25, he made his debut when he replaced Salvador Agra for the final 20 minutes of their 2-1 loss to Rayo Vallecano at home.

Campbell featured in 28 league games and scored twice, the first on 2 December to help Betis defeat Deportivo de La Corua 3-2 on the road and the second on January 13 to help Betis defeat Levante 2-0 at home.

Loan to Olympiacos

By the summer of 2013, Campbell had been given permission to work in England, but he returned to Olympiacos in Greece for another one-year loan.

Campbell had a standout performance in Olympiacos’ 5-1 victory over OFI Crete on October 27, 2013, bringing up four assists in the process. Campbell continued to shine on November 10 as Olympiacos defeated PAOK 4-0 with a single goal and two assists from Campbell.

Campbell contributed to Olympiacos’ 2-0 victory over Manchester United on February 25, 2014, in the UEFA Champions League round of 16. However, Olympiacos was eliminated after suffering a 3-0 defeat in the return match.

Return to Arsenal

Campbell will be a part of Arsène Wenger’s first team plans for Arsenal in the 2014–15 season, according to Wenger. Campbell scored in Arsenal’s 5-1 Emirates Cup victory over Benfica on August 2, 2014.

He took Aaron Ramsey’s place for the last five minutes of Wembley Stadium’s 3-0 victory over Manchester City eight days later in the 2014 FA Community Shield. On August 23, in a 2-2 draw with Everton at Goodison Park, he made his Premier League debut, coming off the bench to take Alex Oxlade-place Chamberlain’s in the 74th minute.

In the third round of the League Cup on September 23, Campbell made his debut appearance for Arsenal, lining up in attack with Alexis Sanchez and Lukas Podolski in a 1-2 loss to Southampton at home. Campbell and Podolski were “essentially anonymous” during the game, according to BBC Sport.

Campbell expressed his dissatisfaction during this period in an interview with TD Más in April 2020, recalling how Arsenal had rejected a signing offer from Benfica because “they [Arsenal] told me they needed me since Giroud was injured,” yet the club still went on to sign Danny Welbeck.

2015–16 season

On September 23, 2015, Campbell made his season debut in a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the third round of the League Cup after returning from his loan at Villarreal. Campbell scored his first professional goal in a 3-0 victory over Swansea City in his first Premier League start for the team.

On December 6, against Sunderland, Campbell scored his first goal in the Premier League and the first for Arsenal in a 3-1 victory. On January 9, 2016, the teams rematched at the Emirates for the FA Cup third round, with Campbell once more scoring the opening goal for Arsenal as they replicated the result from a little over a month earlier.

Campbell said that following a 1-2 loss to Watford, he had lost his regularity at Arsenal. Arsène Wenger was questioned about the issue by Campbell, who had “tears in [his] eyes out of helplessness.” Wenger said, “I observed you were fatigued,” but despite Campbell’s desire to play, he continued to be inconsistent throughout the season. Campbell, exasperated, asked for a fresh loan.

International Career

Campbell was chosen for the Costa Rican team competing in the CONCACAF U-17 Championship in 2009. Despite only having two goals overall, he was the team’s leading scorer. Two years later, he was selected for the 2011 CONCACAF U-20 Championship and tied for the tournament’s leading scorer with six goals.

For friendlies against PR China and Argentina in March 2011, Campbell received his first call-up to the senior team.

He would do can juggling in San José’s streets. Ricardo La Volpe, the manager of the national team, observed him doing this before the friendly.

For the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States, Campbell was called up. He came in to replace Marco Urea in the 56th minute of their 5-0 victory over Cuba on June 5 at Cowboys Stadium in their opening game of the group round. He replaced Urea again during the second half of extra time in the quarterfinal match at MetLife Stadium. The match then went to a penalty shootout, in which Campbell made his effort but Honduras won 4-2.

When Costa Rica was accepted to the 2011 Copa América in Argentina, Campbell was a member of the team and started all of their games as they finished third in Group A and were eliminated.

In an eventual 3-1 victory over Uruguay on June 14, 2014, Campbell netted Costa Rica’s opening goal of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The third goal of the contest was likewise made possible by his feed to Marco Urea.  In a 5-3 penalty shootout victory over Greece in the round of 16, Campbell was the fourth of five Costa Rican players to make a kick that was successful. For the 2017 Gold Cup, Campbell was re-called to the Costa Rican team.
