Yuto Nagatomo (born September 12, 1986) is a Japanese full-back who competes for both the Japan national team and the Japanese club FC Tokyo. Nagatomo, a product of Meiji University, began his professional career with FC Tokyo in 2007 and rapidly became the team’s first choice as well as a player for the Japanese national team. He continued to play in Europe for more than ten years, beginning in 2010 when he signed with Cesena. He also had successful stints with Inter Milan (where he played for seven years, making more than 200 appearances overall and even serving as captain for a short time), Galatasaray, and Olympique Marseille. He would later return to FC Tokyo, where he first played.
He won a J.League Cup with Tokyo in 2009, a Coppa Italia with Inter Milan in 2011, two consecutive Turkish championships in 2018 and 2019 as well as a Turkish Cup and a Turkish Super Cup in 2019. (all with Galatasaray). In 2013, he also received a special honor as the Asian International Player of the Year by the AFC. Nagatomo is Japan’s second-most capped player of all time, after only Yasuhito End with 136 appearances (including four goals). Just a few months after making his professional debut with FC Tokyo, the full-back earned his first cap for the Samurai Blue in 2008.
He has since gone on to represent Japan at one Olympic Games (in 2008), three World Cups (in 2010, 2014, and 2018), three Asian Cups (in 2011, 2015, and 2019), and one Confederations Cup (in 2013). Both the team that won the Asian Cup in 2011 and the team that placed second in the same competition in 2019 included him.

Club Career
FC Tokyo
While still at Meiji, Nagatomo signed a formal contract with FC Tokyo in 2008. But in 2007, he participated in the J.League Cup as a Special Designated Youth Player. In his four years with FC Tokyo, Nagatomo made 84 appearances.
Cesena
The freshly promoted Serie A team Cesena recruited Nagatomo on a loan in July 2010. He spent the first half of the season as Cesena’s starting left defender. Before relocating to Italy, Nagatomo addressed 25,000 fans following the F.C. Tokyo vs. Vissel Kobe game on July 17, 2010. Nagatomo was sold to Internazionale after being committed to a long-term contract.
Galatasaray
For the remainder of the 2017–18 campaign, Nagatomo joined Turkish side Galatasaray on loan on January 31, 2018. The agreement was made permanent on June 30, 2018
Marseille
Nagatomo joined Ligue 1 team Marseille on a free transfer on August 31, 2020. On September 20, 2020, he made his club debut during a 1-1 league tie with Lille.
International Career
On May 24, 2008, Nagatomo played for Japan against Ivory Coast in a friendly match. On November 13, 2008, he scored his first goal for his country against Syria in a friendly match. Nagatomo participated in the 2008 Summer Olympics as a member of the Japan U-21 squad.
2011 AFC Asian Cup
Nagatomo was chosen by head coach Alberto Zaccheroni to represent Japan at the 2011 AFC Asian Cup. He participated in every match Japan played throughout the competition, and he helped Japan overcome Australia in the championship game to win his country’s first-ever international medal.
2014 FIFA World Cup
Nagatomo was a member of the Japanese national team that traveled to Brazil for the 2014 World Cup. Despite Japan being eliminated from the group stage, he started all three of the group matches.
On November 10, 2017, Nagatomo won his 100th international cap after leading his team in a 1-3 friendly defeat to Brazil in Lille’s Stade Pierre-Mauroy. He became just the seventh player from Japan to accomplish the feat.
At the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, Nagatomo took the field against Iran. Later, he was chosen for both the 2019 Asian Cup and the 2018 World Cup. He now holds the second-most national team caps with 124.
