Yassine Bounou, better known as Bono, is a Moroccan professional football goalkeeper who competes for La Liga club Sevilla and the Morocco national team. He was born on April 5, 1991.

He played the most of his career in Spain, earning 56 games in Segunda División for Zaragoza and Girona and over 100 La Liga outings for Girona and Sevilla. In 2020, he helped Sevilla win the UEFA Europa League.

Bounou, a full international for Morocco since 2013, representing his country at three Africa Cup of Nations competitions as well as the 2018 FIFA World Cup. At the 2012 Olympics, he had previously played for the under-23 team.

Bounou and fellow league team Girona agreed to a two-year deal in writing on July 12. He shared playing time with René Román in his debut season and played precisely half of the games as they were promoted to second place. He was the first choice at the elite club in January 2019, therefore he extended his contract until June 2021.

Sevilla

After being relegated with the Catalans on September 2, 2019, Bono joined Sevilla FC in the first division on a one-year loan. His regular participation in the domestic cup and as the team won the 2019–20 UEFA Europa League earned him praise for his performances against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the quarterfinals, where he saved a penalty from Ral Jiménez to earn a 1-0 win, as well as in the 2-1 semi-final win over Manchester United, and ultimately his decisive save of Romelu Lukaku’s one-on-one strike, which helped the team win the final.

Bono signed a permanent four-year deal with the Andalusians on September 4, 2020. On March 21, the following year, against Real Valladolid, in the dying seconds of a game, he scored his first goal as a professional goalkeeper to preserve a 1-1 draw.

International Career

Bounou had the choice of representing Morocco or Canada, but he chose the latter. At the 2012 Toulon Tournament, he participated with the under-20 squad and played in one match. He was also chosen for the 18-man under-23 team for the 2012 Summer Olympics, however, during the competition, in which Morocco was ousted at the group stage, he served as Mohamed Amsif’s backup.

Bounou was called up to the starting lineup for a friendly match against Burkina Faso on August 14, 2013. The day after, he made his debut, playing the whole second half of Tangier’s eventual 1-2 loss.

Bounou was chosen in May 2018 to represent Morocco at the World Cup in Russia. He was Hervé Renard’s first choice for the squad in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, keeping clean sheets in 1-0 victories over Namibia and the Ivory Coast to go to the round of 16.

Additionally, Bounou received a call-up for the Cameroon-hosted 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. He gained notoriety at the competition for defending Arabic and refusing to communicate with the media in any other language.
