Early life
On September 1, 1950, Alekperov was born in Baku, Azerbaijan SSR, one of the first hubs of the global petroleum industry. Alekperov’s mother was a Russian Orthodox and his father was a Muslim from Azerbaijan.

Western Siberia
Alekperov relocated to Western Siberia in 1979, where he worked for Surgutneftegaz from 1979 to 1985, establishing himself as an authority in the field. As he rose through the ranks, Bashneft Production Company promoted him to first deputy general director in 1985.

Alekperov became the youngest deputy energy minister in Soviet history when he was named deputy minister of the oil and gas industry in 1990.
