Ipswich Town

Mings joined Ipswich Town in December 2012 following a brief trial for a price of £10,000 and an agreement for Ipswich to play a pre-season friendly against Chippenham. Mings made his debut for Ipswich on the last day of the 2012–13 season against Burnley on 4 May 2013.

He began the 2013–14 season as the backup left-back to Aaron Cresswell, however he did start the season opener owing to Cresswell’s suspension. Mings began an FA Cup match against Preston North End as right-back instead of his customary left-back position on January 4, 2014. During the season, he made 18 appearances, including 6 starts and 12 substitute appearances.

Tyrone Mings was given the number 3 shirt after Aaron Cresswell moved to West Ham United in July 2014. As a result, Mings offered to buy new jerseys for two admirers who had purchased shirts with his former number 15 written on the back.

Mings was the target of a £3 million bid from Crystal Palace on transfer deadline day in August 2014, which Ipswich rejected. He signed a new three-year deal with Ipswich Town on September 20, 2014.

Tyrone Mings began the 2014–15 season as the starting left-back, making his debut in a 2–1 win over Fulham on the first day of the season. Throughout the season, he was an important member of the team.

Tyrone Mings made his Premier League debut for Bournemouth in a 1–1 draw with Leicester City on August 29, 2015. However, six minutes after coming on as a half-time substitution, he suffered a knee injury. On September 3, 2015, it was announced that Mings’ injury would keep him out of action for 9 to 12 months. On January 7, 2017, he made his FA Cup comeback, losing 3–0 against Millwall in the third round.

Loaned to Aston Villa

Tyrone Mings joined Aston Villa on loan for the remainder of the season on January 31, 2019. On February 2nd, he made his Villa debut against Reading. The game was marred by controversy as Mings trod on the face of Reading striker Nélson Oliveira during a skirmish for the ball.

Oliveira was dragged away with serious gashes on his brow and nose. Mings later apologised, saying it was not his intention. No retrospective action was given since referee Geoff Eltringham saw the incident and judged it was unintentional.

Tyrone Mings scored his first goal for Aston Villa in his second game on February 8, 2019. He scored in the 82nd minute of Sheffield United’s home game.

Aston Villa were down 3–0 at the time, but they went on to perform a late comeback to level the game 3–3. Despite Villa’s terrible form at the time, Mings was a star performer who soon became a fan favourite despite having only recently joined from Bournemouth.

Permanent signing to Aston Villa

Tyrone Mings joined Aston Villa on a permanent basis on July 8, 2019. The initial cost was thought to be £20 million, with possible add-ons totaling £25 million.

Tyrone said that after the UK government declared the restart of sports and the Premier League announced the return of teams as part of “Project Restart” on June 17, the players were the last to be contacted and were simply regarded as “commodities in the game.”

He signed a new four-year deal with Aston Villa on September 21, 2020. Mings was named Aston Villa’s new captain on 14 August 2021, following the departure of former captain Jack Grealish, having served as temporary captain during Grealish’s injury in the second half of the 2020–21 season.

International Career

Early Years

Tyrone Mings was also eligible for Barbados through his paternal grandparents, in addition to England. During his playing career, his father Adie turned down a call-up from Barbados. Mings’ first England call-up came in August 2019, when he was included to the team for the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Kosovo.

Tyrone Mings got his first senior England cap in an October 2019 0–6 victory away to Bulgaria, playing the full match. Racist shouts from Bulgarian fans marred the game, which Mings reported to captain Harry Kane, who subsequently reported it to the referee. This triggered regular UEFA protocol, thus putting an end to the shouting.

On the 18th of June, he also started against Scotland, helping England retain a clean sheet in a 0–0 tie. In 22 June, he came on as a second-half replacement in England’s final group encounter. It was a 1–0 triumph over the Czech Republic. England finished top of Group D, qualifying for the knockout stages.

Following England’s penalty shootout loss to Italy in the final, three England players, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka, faced online racial abuse after missing in the shootout. Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, tweeted that she was “disgusted.”

Tyrone Mings then responded to her on Twitter, accusing her of inciting racist behaviour among supporters, while previously calling the players’ anti-racism message of kneeling before kickoff “gesture politics” and claiming that fans had the right to boo it.

“You don’t get to build the fire before the start of the tournament by labelling our anti-racism message as ‘Gesture Politics,’ then claim to be outraged when the same thing we’re fighting against happens,” Mings said in full.

Mings scored his first international goal on November 15, 2021. This was in a 10–0 away 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying triumph over San Marino.
