Early Life

Trick Daddy was born at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida, on September 27, 1974. After coming from Goulds, Florida, his mother, Pearl Brockington of South Carolina, raised him and his ten brothers and sisters in the Liberty Square apartment complex in Liberty City. The neighbourhood where he grew up was dubbed “Pork-N-Beans” because of the hue of the apartment doors. His father, Charles Young, was a local pimp who took Trick and his brother Derek “Hollywood” Harris to live with him when he was a teenager. Trick and Hollywood began dealing crack cocaine on the streets while living with Trick’s father. Young was arrested for drug and handgun possession when he was 15 years old.

Young was jailed on an attempted murder charge the day after his parole for shooting a guy during a street brawl. At the age of 20, he was convicted and sentenced to jail. In the same year, his brother was slain. Ted Lucas, the founder of Slip-N-Slide Records, advised Young to focus on a rap career and keep off the streets after he was released from prison.

Personal Life

Trick Daddy said that he had lupus, which has impacted his complexion, and that he has stopped taking his lupus medicine. The rapper justified his refusal of treatment by claiming that “Because I had to take a test or another drug every thirty days or so to ensure that the medicine I was taking wasn’t producing renal or liver failure adverse effects… I merely claimed that I’m not taking any drugs.” Trick Daddy has recently struggled financially, declaring bankruptcy three times, the most recent of which occurred on the day his house was to be repossessed and auctioned off.

Joy, Trick Daddy’s ex-wife, stated during part 2 of the Love & Hip Hop: Miami Season 2 reunion that she had filed for divorce from him.

Professional Career

Trick had an appearance on Luther “Luke” Campbell’s 1996 album Uncle Luke’s single “Scarred,” which was produced by Darren “DJ Spin” Rudnick and featured Trick. The song was an instant smash, capturing the attention of both fans and record producers. The rapper was signed to the newly created record company by Ted Lucas, a veteran concert organiser and then-CEO of Slip-n-Slide Records. In 1997, Slip-n-Slide released Trick Daddy Dollars’ debut album Based on a True Story, which was well-received in Miami.

Trick dropped “Dollars” from his stage name when his second album, www.thug.com, was published in 1998. “Nann Nigga,” a club-oriented single starring Trina, became a nationwide smash, ranking at #3 on the Billboard Hot Rap Singles list.

In 2000, Trick Daddy signed with Atlantic Records and released Book of Thugs: Chapter AK Verse 47. The lead song from Book of Thugs was “Shut Up,” which allmusic’s Jason Birchmeier called Trick’s “rowdiest club hit yet.” “America” (featuring Society) was Trick’s next song, a heartbreaking political piece that writer Omar Burgess linked to earlier social Trick classics like “Ain’t No Santa.”

Thugs Are Us was released in 2001 and contained the smash track “I’m a Thug,” which peaked at #17 on the Billboard Hot 100 on March 20, 2001.

Trick Daddy’s fifth album, Thug Holiday, featured the track “In da Wind,” which Birchmeier thought was his most inventive.

Thug Matrimony: Married To The Streets was released in 2004, and featured the popular track “Let’s Go,” which was produced by Lil Jon, featured Twista, and sampled the guitar chords from Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train.” Trick Daddy had a cameo appearance on the Ying Yang Twins’ “What’s Happnin!” that year, which charted at #30 on the Hot 100, #7 on the Rhythmic Top 40, and #9 on the Hot Rap Singles. On the Hot 100, “Let’s Go” reached #7, #4 on the Rhythmic Top 40, and #4 on Hot Rap Tracks. The tracks “Bet That” and “Tuck Ya Ice” were charted on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart in 2006.

Trick Daddy’s Group, Dunk Ryders’ single “Damn Right” featuring Dray Skky, and Trick’s joint venture label deal with Cash Money Records were all debuted on this album.

Following Back By Thug Demand, Trick Daddy performed on additional DJ Khaled tracks, including “Born-N-Raised” from Listennn… the Album in 2006, “I’m So Hood” from We the Best in 2007, and “Out Here Grindin'” from We Global in 2008. “Born-N-Raised” at #83 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart, while “I’m So Hood” hit #19 on the Hot 100 and #5 on the Hot Rap Tracks chart. Pitbull’s 2007 album The Boatlift included him.

Trick Daddy left Slip-n-Slide in 2008 and released his eighth studio album, Finally Famous: Born a Thug Still a Thug, on September 25, 2009, under his own Dunk Ryder Records label, which had grown to include fellow Miami artists Ice “Billion” Berg, Fella, Bad Guy, Kasino, A-Dot, NoLove, Dutch Dirty, and Gold Rush, all of whom eventually left the label to pursue their own independent projects. He recorded a single called “I Can’t Leave These Streets Alone” with Young Jeezy, and subsequently appeared on the tune “This Is For You” off Jeezy’s latest album, Thug Motivation 103: Hustlerz Ambition, which was released in December 2011.

Trick Daddy starred as Roman, a drug dealer, in the 2010 film Just Another Day. Over the course of one day, the lives of an aspiring rapper and an established popular rapper collide. Trick Daddy debuted on the VH1 reality show Love & Hip Hop: Miami in 2018. In 2017, he co-hosted a podcast with Supa Cindy.

Controversies

Trick Daddy was sentenced to 15 months in Florida state jail in 1993 after being convicted of cocaine possession, carrying a concealed firearm, and breaking probation. He was detained on gun charges in February 2003 after a brawl at a basketball game, then again in September 2003 when police discovered cocaine and marijuana in his pocket. He received probation after pleading guilty to drug and weapons offences.

He was detained outside of his house in Miramar, Florida on April 3, 2014. According to his arrest record, he was apprehended by authorities who were searching his residence for evidence of a grow house.

Police allegedly discovered one gramme of cocaine in Trick Daddy’s bedroom, as well as a 9mm weapon and ammo in another bedroom, after entering his home with a warrant and drug sniffing dogs. Young was charged with cocaine possession, handgun and ammunition possession by a convicted criminal, and driving with a suspended licence. He was freed on a $6,100 bail the next morning.

Trick Daddy was arrested in Miami on January 11, 2020, after police thought he had been drinking and driving. Trick Daddy was arrested at the Hammocks District Station for driving under the influence after authorities detected alcohol on his breath and he failed a field sobriety test.
