He spent the first decade of his life in Australia -before moving to New Zealand, his birthplace, at the age of 21. For Best Leading Actor, he won statuettes from the Broadcast Film Critics Association, the London Film Critics Circle, Academy, and the Empire. In recognition of his portrayal of the Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius in the hit film Gladiator, he received ten further nominations.

He was born on April 7, 1964, in the Strathmore Park district of Wellington, New Zealand. His father was a hotel manager in the hospitality business. Cinematographer Stan Wemyss was his maternal grandfather. He was awarded a Member of the British Empire medal for his World War II service.

He moved to Australia, residing in Sydney. There, his parents worked as film set caterers. Crowe began his acting career when he was cast with Jack Thompson in an episode of the Australian television series Spyforce. In the 1994 film The Sum of Us, Thompson played Crowe’s character’s father. 

Acting Career 

Crowe, at age 21, left his birthplace and travelled back to Australia with the intention of enrolling in the National Institute of Dramatic Art. He performed the part once again in a second production of the musical that toured New Zealand. Crowe resorted to busking in 1987 while he was unemployed for six months. Crowe made his North American film debut with For the Moment in 1993 before transitioning to Hollywood projects. In the 1995 film The Quick and the Dead, he was alongside Sharon Stone. In the film Virtuosity, he appeared with Denzel Washington. 

In the six years between 1997 and 2003, he appeared in Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World and  L.A. Confidential, both of which were nominated for an Academy Award for best picture. Again, he collaborated with Ron Howard for the boxing biography Cinderella Man (2005). Beginning with 2006’s A Good Year, he worked on two straight films with Ridley Scott.

Music Career

He was in a band called 30 Odd Foot of Grunts. They performed together in Los Angeles, London, and Austin. The band’s tour of the United States in 2001 featured stops in Boulder, Austin, Chicago, New York City, Portland, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Hollywood, and Asbury Park, New Jersey, for their last performance. 

They “dissolved/evolved” at the beginning of 2005 because Crowe thought his future musical endeavours would follow a new path. His collaboration with Alan Doyle resulted in a new band named The Ordinary Fear of God, which included former members of the original TOFOG. 

The Crowe/Doyle Songbook Vol. III was released on iTunes on August 2, 2011. It consists of nine original songs created by the two, each followed by an acoustic demo version.

Crowe stunned the Rogers Arena audience in Vancouver, British Columbia, on September 26, 2011. There he performed “Folsom Prison Blues,” and then the whole band performed “The Joker.”  

At the Harpa Concert Hall, Crowe and Doyle played on August 18, 2012, as part of the Menningarnótt program.
