Club Career
Porto
Neves was raised in Mozelos (Santa Maria da Feira), Aveiro District, and joined FC Porto’s youth programme at the age of eight. He also spent a season on loan at Padroense, which served as the under-16 team, during his time with the academy. During his time in the youth structures, reserve team manager Luis Castro described him as a player with “extraordinary mental qualities, to go along with technical and tactical skills”.
Neves planned to skip Porto’s under-19s and play with the reserves instead before the 2014–15 season. But after teammate Mikel Agu was hurt, Julen Lopetegui asked him to participate in preseason training with the main group.
He made his Primeira Liga debut on August 15, 2014, at the age of 17 years and five months. He started and scored in a 2-0 home victory over Maritimo, becoming the club’s youngest player ever to do so. Five days later, in a 1-0 victory over Lille, he played in his first UEFA Champions League game, shattering the previous record for the youngest Portuguese player to play in the competition.
International Career
Neves represented Portugal in the 2014 UEFA European Under-17 Championship, serving as the team’s captain and assisting Portugal in reaching the semifinals. A group of UEFA reporters selected him as one of the top 10 talents of the competition based on his performances.
Coach Rui Jorge invited Neves to the under-21 team on August 29, 2014, when he was still 17 years old. His first goal came on October 14, 2015, in a 5-4 home victory against the Netherlands in the 2015 UEFA European Under-21 Championship play-off round.
When the tournament’s finals got underway in the Czech Republic, Neves set a new record by making his Portuguese under-21 team debut at the age of 18 years and 3 months. He played for five minutes to help Portugal defeat England 1-0 in the group stage opener. It was his only appearance, and Portugal went on to lose to Sweden in a penalty shootout in the championship game.
