Club Career
Vitória Setúbal
Horta, an Almada native, signed with Vitória de Setbal in 2011 after leaving Benfica. He made his first-team and Primeira Liga debut on April 7, 2013, replacing Cristiano in the second half of a 2-1 loss against Rio Ave. He played in all six of his last games of the season from the bench.
Horta’s first professional goal came against Académica de Coimbra on December 9, 2013. In his second season, he started all 28 of his games and scored seven goals.
Málaga
Horta agreed to a five-year contract with La Liga team Málaga on July 12, 2014. On August 23, he started his first game in the tournament, a 1-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao at home.
On January 6, 2015, Horta scored his first goal in a 2-0 Copa del Rey victory over Levante at La Rosaleda Stadium. In all competitions, he made 56 appearances until his stint was over.
Braga
Horta was loaned to Braga for a year on July 5, 2016. About a year later, he made a permanent move to the club, while Juan Carlos went the other way. In his second and third seasons, he scored 11 and 8 goals, respectively, contributing to back-to-back fourth-place finishes.
Horta extended his contract by two more seasons in September 2019, extending it until 2024, and raised the buyout clause from €25 million to €30 million. On December 10, he surpassed Paulinho to establish the club record for goals in European competition with a 2-0 home victory against Zorya Luhansk in the group stage of the UEFA Europa League. Both players had just passed Alan on that list.
International Career
At the 2014 Toulon Tournament and the 2015 and 2017 UEFA European Championships, Horta was a member of the Portugal under-20 and under-21 teams, respectively. In his lone outing in the 2015 tournament, he recorded a win, finishing in second place in the Czech Republic.
One week before turning 20, Horta received his first full-team cap on September 7, 2014, when he took William Carvalho’s place early in the second half of a 0-1 home loss to Albania in UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying.
He was called up by Fernando Santos in May 2022, almost eight years after leaving the international stage, for the forthcoming 2022–23 UEFA Nations League matches. He played 20 minutes in the 1–1 tie with Spain in Seville on June 2, 2022.
