Early life

Ocasek was born on March 23, 1944, in Baltimore, Maryland, and grew up there. His family relocated to Cleveland, Ohio, when he was 16 years old, where his father worked as a systems analyst for NASA at the Lewis Research Center.

In 1963, he graduated from Maple Heights High School. Ocasek attended Antioch College and Bowling Green State University for a short time before dropping out to pursue a music career.

In Cleveland in 1965, Ocasek met future Cars bassist Benjamin Orr after seeing him perform with his band the Grasshoppers on the Big 5 Show, a local musical variety show. He met with Orr in Columbus, Ohio, a few years later, and the two began playing in and booking bands together. In 1968, they created ID Nirvana, a band that played around Ohio State University.

Ric Ocasek Personal life

When the Cars broke up, Ocasek and Benjamin Orr, the band’s co-founder, became estranged. Prior to Orr’s death in 2000, the two reconciled. Their friendship was memorialised in Ocasek’s song “Silver,” which he penned in Orr’s honour.

Ocasek married three times throughout his life. Constance, his first wife, divorced him in Ohio in 1971. In the same year, he married Suzanne Otcasek, who spells Ocasek’s name correctly. They had been married for seventeen years.

While still married to Suzanne, Ocasek met 18-year-old Czech-born supermodel Paulina Porizkova while filming the music video for the Cars’ song “Drive” in 1984. Suzanne and Ocasek divorced in 1988. On August 23, 1989, he married Porizkova on the island of Saint-Barthélemy. Porizkova claimed in May 2018 that she and Ocasek had split up a year before.

Ocasek had six sons from his three marriages, two from each. Christopher (b. 1964), his eldest son, is a vocalist who was a member of the rock band Glamour Camp, who issued one album in 1989 and performed as a solo artist in the movie Pretty Woman (1990). Adam (b. 1970), Eron (b. 1973), Derek (b. 1981), Jonathan Raven (b. 1993), and Oliver are his other children (b. 1999). We will know more about Ric Ocasek in Net Worth Section.

Professional career

Early career

Ocasek and Orr moved to Boston in the early 1970s after playing in several bands in Columbus and Ann Arbor, Michigan. Milkwood, a Crosby, Stills, and Nash-style folk rock band, was founded there. In early 1973, they issued one album, How’s The Weather, on Paramount Records, but it did not chart. Greg Hawkes, the keyboardist for the Future Cars, contributed to Milkwood’s record.

Following Milkwood, Ocasek founded Richard and the Rabbits, a band that included Orr and Hawkes. During this time, Ocasek and Orr also performed as an acoustic duo. Some of the songs they performed later became early Cars hits.

Later, in the band Cap’n Swing, Ocasek and Orr teamed up with guitarist Elliot Easton. WBCN disc jockey Maxanne Sartori quickly noticed Cap’n Swing and began playing songs from their demo tape on her show.

After many record labels rejected Cap’n Swing, Ocasek fired the bassist and drummer and formed a new band that better suited his writing approach. David Robinson, best known for his work with the Modern Lovers, took over on drums, while Orr took over on bass. In late 1976, Hawkes returned to play keyboards, and the band was renamed “the Cars.”

Solo career

In 1982, Ocasek released his debut solo album. The Cars’ new wave rock sound gets a little more experimental with Beatitude. Ocasek played all of the instruments on several of the tracks. Greg Hawkes contributed to the record as well.

The Cars broke up in 1988, and Ocasek disappeared for a few years. In 1990, he returned with his own album, Fireball Zone. Although one song, “Rockaway,” spent a brief time on the charts, his solo albums sold poorly, especially in comparison to his popularity with the Cars.

During the decade, he released three more solo albums: 1993’s Quick Change World, 1996’s Getchertiktz, and 1997’s Billy Corgan-produced Troublizing (which Ocasek supported with a very brief tour, his first since leaving the Cars). Thousands of tapes were destroyed in the 2008 Universal fire, including Ocasek’s recordings. We will know more about Ric Ocasek in Net Worth Section.

Ric Ocasek Net worth

He was an American music producer and musician who died in 2019 with a net worth of $40 million. That is his joint net worth with supermodel Paulina Porizkova, whom he has been married for three decades.

It should be emphasised, however, that Ric’s will showed after his death that he did not intend for Paulina to partake in any of his personal assets outside of the marriage. That included, at the very least, $5 million in copyrighted intellectual property, as well as other liquid assets on hand, according to his will. To protect his family’s anonymity, the vast majority of his considerable fortune was retained in trusts.

Ric Ocasek Family

Ric Ocasek married three times throughout his life. In 1984, while making a music video for The Cars’ song “Drive,” he met 18-year-old model Paulina Porizkova while still married to his second wife Suzanne Ocasek.

In 1988, Ric and Suzanne divorced. Ric and Paulina tied the knot in 1989. Paulina got an endorsement agreement with Estée Lauder the year before they married, which paid her $6 million per year until 1995.

She made $42 million before taxes on that one sale alone, which translates to about $80 million in today’s currency when adjusted for inflation. Until Ric’s death in 2019, they were legally married, but they had been “peacefully separated” since May 2018.

Ric Ocasek Death

Paulina Porizkova, Ocasek’s former wife, discovered him dead on September 15, 2019, in his New York City townhouse, which they still shared after their divorce in May. He’d been recovering from surgery for a while. Ocasek died of natural causes, according to the Chief Medical Examiner’s office. He had hypertensive heart disease as well as coronary artery disease.

Porizkova and Ocasek were still divorcing, but he had disinherited her in a new will, stating that she had abandoned him before his recent operation. He also disinherited two of his six kids (Chris and Adam), necessitating a probate judge’s decision on the abandonment claims before the remainder of the estate could be distributed.

The lawsuit between Ocasek’s estate and Porizkova was finally concluded in 2021, with Porizkova stating, “They gave me what is mine under New York state law, and we’re done.”
