Early Career

Remo Freuler began his youth career with FC Hinwil before joining FC Winterthur in 2005. Freuler made his professional debut with Winterthur at the age of 18 in 2010, appearing twice as a substitute at the conclusion of the 2009–10 Swiss Challenge League.

He was transferred to Grasshopper Club Zürich that summer, where he played the most of the season with the under-21 team. He did play for the professional team at the start of the Super League season, where he scored against rival FC Zürich. The next season, Freuler was cut from the squad and loaned back to Winterthur during the winter break.

Winterthur

Freuler joined a Winterthur team that finished the first half of the season in tenth position in the Challenge League, only two points above the relegation zone. Winterthur finished fourth that season after he made 14 appearances, highlighted by his first career goals for the club in the form of a brace against Kriens on March 4, 2012. In the 2012–13 season, Freuler started all but two games as Winterthur finished third. Freuler’s contract with Winterthur was extended in the summer, and he played 21 more games for the club the following season before joining Super League team FC Luzern.

Luzern

Remo Freuler was moved to Luzern on 18 February 2014, and he made his club debut on 2 March against St. Gallen under manager Carlos Bernegger. On April 6, Freuler scored his first goal for the club against Young Boys, and Luzern finished fourth in the 2013–14 season.

The next season, Freuler scored seven goals and gave five assists for Luzern, who staged a comeback under new manager Markus Babbel. This was after Bernegger sacked them mid-season and completing the first half of the season bottom of the league. He started every game of the new season for Babbel before being traded to Atalanta B.C. in Italy.

Remo Freuler joined Atalanta for €2 million on January 19, 2016, and made his Serie A debut on February 7 against Empoli. After being replaced against Sampdoria the next week, Freuler was an unused replacement for manager Edy Reja for the next seven games until returning to the starting eleven two months later against Roma.

After the game, an Italian writer dubbed him Iceman, which Freuler explained was “because I was so cool on the ball.” On May 2, he scored his first goal for the Bergamo team against eventual runners-up Napoli.

Freuler made 29 appearances for Atalanta in the 2016–17 season, which saw the club finish fourth in the standings, a nine-place improvement under first-year manager Gian Piero Gasperini.

For the first time since 1990, Atalanta qualified for the Europa League group stages. Freuler has five goals and four assists. On April 28, Freuler scored a late equaliser against eventual winners Juventus at home, delaying their opportunity to win the Scudetto that weekend.

Freuler made his Europa League group stage debut against English club Everton, playing the full 90 minutes in a 3–0 triumph. He previously appeared for Luzern in a two-leg second round qualifying tie against Scottish club St Johnstone. In the 2017–18 season, he made his debut for Atalanta against Fiorentina, scoring an equaliser in the fourth minute of stoppage time on September 24, 2017.

International Career

Freuler progressed through Switzerland’s junior system before being called up to the senior squad for the first time during Switzerland’s 2018 World Cup qualification campaign. He was included to the 23-man Swiss national team roster for the 2018 World Cup.
