Club Career

Al Ahly

Sobhi made his professional debut at the age of 17 on February 6, 2014, in an Egyptian Premier League game against Ghazl El-Mahalla, managed by Mohamed Youssef, after rising through the youth ranks at the Cairo club Al Ahly. He played for Al Ahly-U17s at the Sheikh Zayed Friendly Tournament in the UAE in April 2014, when he caught the eye of Spanish club Atlético Madrid.

He scored his first goal for Al Ahly on June 16, 2014, in a 3-0 victory over Misr Lel-Makasa. He began the pivotal title play-off game against city rivals Zamalek on June 28, 2014, and he contributed to his team’s 1-0 triumph.

He scored twice in a 4-0 victory against Petrojet on July 2 to help Al Ahly win the league. Sobhi and Al Ahly agreed to a long-term contract in March 2015. Al Ahly’s victory over Zamalek in the 2014 Egyptian Super Cup was aided by Sobhi.

Under Juan Garrido, he established himself as a regular, and his efforts in 2014–15 caught the eye of many European teams, including Arsenal, RB Leipzig, Roma, Sampdoria, and Udinese. On January 10, 2015, in the first match between the teams after the violence at the Port Said Stadium in 2012, he scored an injury-time equalizer against Al-Masry.

On July 21, 2015, in a 2-0 victory against Zamalek, Sobhi stood on the ball, causing Hazem Emam to kick out at him and get dismissed. This incident garnered Sobhi international notoriety. Al Ahly finished the 2014–15 season in second place, trailing only Zamalek, their ferocious adversary.

As he restated his stance on the ball trick that infuriated the Zamalek players, Sobhi generated controversy in the 2015 Egyptian Super Cup matchup versus Zamalek.

Al Ahly went on to defeat his opponent 3-2 and afterward expressed regret for his behavior. On April 15, 2016, during a game against ENPPI, he was dismissed for the first time in his career after arguing with an ENNPI player during halftime.

Stoke City

For a $5 million price, Sobhi joined Stoke City in the Premier League on July 25, 2016. On August 20, 2016, he made his Stoke debut in the Premier League against Manchester City. On October 31, 2016, in a 3-1 victory over Swansea City, he contributed his first assist for Stoke when Alfie Mawson’s cross resulted in an own goal.

The following game, against West Ham United, saw him make his debut Premier League start, making history as the first youngster to start a league game for Stoke in nine years. After returning from the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, Sobhi shone in victories over Middlesbrough and Crystal Palace at home. As Stoke concluded the season in 13th place, Sobhi appeared on the field 19 times.

Sobhi and the Potters agreed to a new five-year deal before the start of the 2017–18 campaign. On August 23, 2017, he scored his first goal for Stoke in a 4-0 EFL Cup victory over Rochdale. On December 23, 2017, he scored his first Premier League goal in a 3-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion. On Boxing Day, he tied the score against Huddersfield Town with a goal. As Stoke was demoted to the EFL Championship in 2017–18, Sobhi made 27 appearances throughout the season.

Huddersfield Town

On June 12, 2018, Sobhi signed a three-year contract with Huddersfield Town for a sum of £5.7 million. He only made four appearances for the Terriers and struggled to win David Wagner’s approval before making a comeback to Egyptian football in January 2019.

International Career

At 17 years, 11 months, and 18 days old, Sobhi made his national team debut against Tanzania on June 14, 2015, in the opening round of a qualifier for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, making him the second-youngest player to ever represent Egypt. He scored his first goal at the highest level of the game on March 29 against Nigeria in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match.

Héctor Cper chose Sobhi to be a member of the Egyptian team that played in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in January. Sobhi played in four of Egypt’s six games throughout the campaign, mostly as a substitute as Egypt fell to Cameroon in the championship game.

He was included in Egypt’s preliminary team for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia in May of that year. He led the Egypt national under-23 football team at the 2019 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations, which Egypt hosted, in November 2019.

Ramadan scored the second goal in the 114th minute as Egypt defeated Ivory Coast 2-1 to win the championship. Ramadan was also chosen as the competition’s top athlete.
