Rainn Dietrich Wilson was born on January 20, 1966, in Seattle, Washington. Shay Cooper, an actor and yoga instructor, was his mother, and Robert G. Wilson, an artist, and author best known for the science-fiction novel Tentacles of Dawn, was his father.
Wilson spent a few years of his boyhood in Nicaragua before returning to Washington to attend middle and high school. Nonetheless, his family relocated to Illinois before he graduated from New Trier High School. He subsequently enrolled at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he majored in theatre and graduated with honors in 1986.
Afterward, he went to New York University’s Graduate Acting Department at the Tisch School of the Arts, where he earned an MFA in acting and joined The Acting Company. Wilson played onstage in several shows around the country over the next many years until his big break in movies and TV.

Career
Wilson’s first on-screen appearance was in an episode of the popular soap series One Life to Live in 1997. He landed a supporting part in the television series The Expendables two years later (not to be confused with the Sylvester Stallone action franchise by that name).
The same year, he made his feature film debut in the sci-fi comedy Galaxy Quest, and in 2000, he appeared in Cameron Crowe’s autobiographical Almost Famous. Subsequently, in 2002, he was cast as one of the numerous leads in Rob Zombie’s first horror film House of 1000 Corpses.
He debuted on the show Six Feet Under in 2003 and has since been on Law & Order: SVU, CSI, Monk, Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Reno 911, and other shows. He appeared in the action-adventure picture Sahara in 2005, but it was in a television show the same year that he rose to fame in his most renowned role.

Wilson has worked on a number of projects since The Office ended, including a detective series called Backstrom, portraying the wicked Gargamel in The Smurfs: The Lost Village, and the monster shark movie The Meg. Wilson first appeared in the Star Trek universe in 2017 as Harry Mudd in two episodes of Star Trek: Discovery, a role he reprised in one of the Star Trek: Short Treks dubbed “The Escape Artist,” which he also directed.
