Rafael Alexandre da Conceiço Leao, who was born on June 10, 1999, is a striker for the Portugal national team and Serie A club AC Milan. His Portuguese name is Rafael Alexandre da Conceiço Leo. Leo, a graduate of Sporting CP’s development system, made his first-team debut in 2018 and went on to win the 2017–18 Taça da Liga. However, after an incident within the club, he voluntarily terminated his contract. He soon signed on as a free agent with Lille in Ligue 1.

He joined AC Milan in 2019 for an alleged sum of €35 million. He assisted the squad in winning the 2021–22 Serie A, ending the club’s 11–year title drought, in his third season with the organization. He was also chosen as the Most Valuable Player in Serie A. Leo was a member of the under-17 squad that won the 2016 European Championship and has represented Portugal at several junior levels. Club Career

Sporting CP

Leo, whose parents are from Angola and who was born in Almada, Setubal District, joined Sporting CP’s youth program at the age of 9 following a brief stay in Amora.
He made his senior debut on May 21, 2017, while still a youngster, playing for the reserves, scoring in a 1-1 away tie against Braga B.
Leo made his league debut on February 11, 2018, with the first team, thanks to manager Jorge Jesus, taking Bryan Ruiz’s place for the final 21 minutes of the 2-0 victory over Feirense at home.
In a 2-1 loss to Porto on the road on March 2, he equalized for the visitors shortly after entering the game in place of an injured Seydou Doumbia.
In the process, he became the club’s youngest-ever scorer against that team.
Leo unilaterally ended his relationship with the Lees on June 14, 2018, alleging an attack on players and staff during practice by supporters.

Lille

Leo signed a five-year contract and joined French club Lille on a free transfer on August 8, 2018.
Later on, Sporting CP would contest Lille’s agreement to sign the player, calling the move “unacceptable,” filing a grievance with FIFA and demanding the €45 million of his release clause. Lille had agreed to pay Sporting CP for the player.
At the start of September 2018, Leo sought to end his relationship with the team as the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) refused to accept his move because of penalties imposed by the Direction Nationale du Contrôle de Gestion (DNCG) as a result of Lille’s financial struggles.
The DNCG certified all outstanding contracts at Lille, including Leo’s contract, after being persuaded by his representation to remain there.

2019–21: Adaptation to Italy

Leo committed to a five-year deal with AC Milan on August 1 for €35 million with a 20% sell-on clause.
On August 25, he made his Serie A debut, taking Samu Castillejo’s place in the 75th minute of a 1-0 loss to Udinese on the road.
On September 29, Leo scored his first club goal as a late consolation in a 1-3 home defeat to Fiorentina.

Leo scored the opening goal of the 2021–22 season on August 29, 2021–22 at San Siro, scoring from beyond the box in a 4–1 home victory over Cagliari.
On September 15, on his UEFA Champions League debut, he assisted Ante Rebi in a 3-2 loss to Liverpool on the road; on September 28, in a 2-1 defeat to Atlético Madrid at home, he scored his first tournament goal.

Youth

Leo competed at the 2016 UEFA European Under-17 Championship with the Portugal under-17 team.
He participated in five of the six games in this competition, with the exception of the quarterfinal encounter against the Netherlands.
