Club Career
Internacional
Otavio, who was born in Joo Pessoa, Paraguay, completed his training at Internacional after enrolling in the club’s academy at the age of 15. Only two years later, on July 15, in the 0-0 home tie with Santos, he made his Série A debut by substituting in the second half.
On June 8, 2013, Otávio scored his first league goal in a 2-2 away tie against Cruzeiro, which he began and contributed to. He added five more goals throughout the season to complete the campaign in the 13th position.
Otávio gave manager Dunga credit for assisting him in overcoming his weight issues. In 62 competitive games, while playing at the Estadio Beira-Rio, he scored seven goals.
Porto
Otávio signed a five-year contract with a €50 million buyout clause with FC Porto on September 1, 2014, even though it was initially believed that the transfer cost €5 million because Internacional had given up his federative rights. He was initially assigned to the reserve team, which played in the Segunda Liga.
Otavio, Ivo Rodrigues, and Leocsio Sami were loaned to Vitória de Guimares in the Primeira Liga on the final day of the 2015 January transfer window. He made his competition debut on 8 February by playing 30 minutes in a home loss to Belenenses. He then scored his first goal in the competition on the final matchday of the season to help the visitors defeat Académica de Coimbra 4.
His efforts while on loan led to Porto extending his contract, and the agreement was extended for the whole 2015–16 season. On August 12, 2016, he made his competitive debut for Porto, beginning the 3–1 away victory against Rio Ave.
With two goals from 15 games, Otávio won the Portuguese League at the conclusion of his second season. He missed many weeks of the competition owing to physical issues.
Otávio played in 48 games and contributed two goals to the team’s double-winning season in 2019–20. As a consequence, he was named to the league’s Best XI.
International Career
Brazil
Soon after making his international debut, Otávio was chosen by Alexandre Gallo for the Brazil under-20 team.
Portugal
Otávio became a citizen of Portugal in March 2021. On August 26 of that same year, Fernando Santos called him up to the Portuguese national team for games against the Republic of Ireland, Azerbaijan, and Qatar in preparation for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He made his debut against the latter, scoring in the 3-1 victory at the Nagyerdei Stadion in Debrecen, Hungary.
On March 24, 2022, Otávio scored his second goal, starting a 3-1 home victory against Turkey in the World Cup qualifying play-offs semifinals, and then he gave Diogo Jota an assist.
