Life of Ollie Watkins

Born on December 30, 1995, in Torquay, England, he progressed through the development system of EFL club Exeter City before breaking into the first squad at the age of twenty. In December 2015, Ollie made his debut appearance for The Grecians in a fiercely contested Devon Derby, which Exeter won by a single goal against rivals Plymouth Argyle.

Ollie scored his first professional goal the next game, a 2-0 win against Port Vale in the FA Cup. Soon after, the striker established himself as a first-team regular, with 26 goals and 17 assists in 78 games.

It wasn’t long before a number of EFL Championship clubs were interested in signing Ollie, but Brentford were the ones to seal the deal, and the teenage striker joined The Bees on a four-year contract in the summer of 2017.

The striker established a pattern for his tenure when he scored his first hat-trick in a 3-1 win over Barnsley early in the season. In 2019, the striker scored 26 goals to help Brentford reach the Championship Playoffs, but a loss to Fulham in the final saw the team lose out on Premier League football.

Ollie, on the other hand, would realize his Premier League ambitions as Aston Villa paid a club record amount of £33 million to recruit him. On October 4th, 2020, the Englishman made his global debut with a hat-trick against defending Champions Liverpool, as Villa thrashed The Reds 7-2, leaving little question as to why Villa paid the premium for his signing.

Watkins has identified himself as a “number ten” and Thierry Henry as his sporting inspiration, saying in 2017 that “I try to pattern my game on his, by pushing at defenders and seeking to make something happen when I have the ball.” He can also play as a winger. During the 2019–20 season with Brentford, he was transformed into a more typical center striker.

Club Career

Watkins joined Exeter City’s academy at U11 level after failing a trial with the club when he was 9 years old in 2003. After rising through the development ranks to acquire a scholarship agreement in 2012, he signed a two-year professional contract in April 2014 after scoring 30 goals for the U18 squad in its 2013–14 Football League Youth Alliance South West Conference-winning season.

Watkins earned his first first-team call-up when he was picked as a replacement for the final League Two match of the 2013–14 season against Hartlepool United, and he made his professional debut after 77 minutes, replacing Aaron Dawson.

Despite scoring his first senior goal (a late consolation in a 3–1 Football League Trophy second round defeat to Coventry City on 7 October 2014), Watkins made just three appearances before going on loan to Weston-super-Mare for the remainder of the season in December 2014.

Watkins and Exeter City teammate Matt Jay signed one-month loan terms with Conference South club Weston-super-Mare on December 8, 2014.

Through loan extensions, Watkins would stay with the Seagulls until the end of the 2014–15 season. He was a regular for the squad, scoring 10 goals in 25 games before returning to St James Park at the end of the season.

After failing to be nominated to a first-team squad for the first two months of the 2015–16 season, Watkins was promoted to the substitutes’ bench in October 2015 and made his season debut late that month.

On 6 December, he made his debut for Exeter City in a 2–1 Devon derby victory over Plymouth Argyle, and he scored his first goal of the season with the Grecians’ second goal in the next match, a 2–0 FA Cup second round triumph over Port Vale. Watkins has gotten into the starting lineup by March of 2016.

In March, he had a tremendous month, scoring four goals in six games to earn the Football League Young Player of the Month and the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month honors. His scoring streak lasted until mid-April, when he concluded with eight goals in ten outings.

Two of his goals came in the return Devon derby against Plymouth Argyle, when his late brace clinched a 2–1 comeback victory, and the second goal was later awarded the club’s Goal of the Season. Watkins scored 10 goals in 22 games during the 2015–16 season.

Watkins’ efforts in the latter two months of the 2015–16 season helped him establish himself as a first-team regular in 2016–17. He had an exciting season, appearing in 52 games, scoring six goals and providing 13 assists, yet the season finished on a sad note with the Grecians’ 2–1 loss to Blackpool in the 2017 League Two play-off Final at Wembley Stadium.

Watkins scored his first professional hat-trick in a 4–1 win over Newport County on December 31, 2016, and his two goals and five assists in January 2017 earned him League Two Player of the Month honors. On April 9, he was named EFL Young Player of the Year for his season efforts.

Watkins signed a four-year deal with Championship club Brentford on July 18, 2017, with an option for a further year for an unknown cost, rumored to be £1.8 million. On August 8, 2017, he scored his first competitive goal for the club in their 3–1 EFL Cup first round extra time triumph over AFC Wimbledon.

Watkins signed a new four-year deal with a one-year extension option on August 9, 2019. On September 29, 2019, Watkins scored his first hat-trick for the club in a 3–1 win over Barnsley in the Championship.

Watkins appeared in 50 games and scored 26 goals in all competitions during the 2019–20 season, which ended in a loss in the 2020 Championship play-off Final.

Ollie Watkins signed a five-year deal with Premier League club Aston Villa on September 9, 2020, for a then-club-record sum of £28 million, which may increase to £33 million. Watkins was reunited with manager Dean Smith, who had initially signed him for Brentford, when he joined Aston Villa.

Ollie Watkins made his Aston Villa debut on September 15, 2020, scoring in a 3–1 away win in the EFL Cup against Burton Albion. He made his Premier League debut on September 21, 2020, in a 1–0 home win over Sheffield United.

Watkins scored his first Premier League goals on 4 October 2020, with a left footed shot, a right footed strike, and a header for a perfect hat-trick in a 7–2 home win against champions Liverpool. It was Liverpool’s biggest defeat in 57 years, and it was the first occasion in Premier League history that a reigning champion surrendered seven goals in a single game.
