Club Career
Born in Cambridgeshire’s Soham, Nick Pope went to King’s School in neighboring Ely. An Ipswich Town season ticket holder, he began his career in the club’s youth system at the age of 10 and stayed with the club until he was discharged at the age of 16. After being released by Ipswich Town, he joined non-league team Bury Town in 2008.
After challenging and briefly replacing Marcus Garnham, Pope showed his ability at that level by wearing the number one shirt for Bury Town in a number of first-team matches after making his debut for the club at the age of 16. Pope has also played for West Suffolk College and has represented England Colleges.
Nick Pope was recruited by League One team Charlton Athletic on May 24, 2011, after scouts noticed him during a 2–1 win against Billericay Town. He was then summoned to Charlton for a trial. After impressing staff during a trial, he was signed on a two-year contract after the two clubs agreed on a compensation package that included Charlton hosting Suffolk in a pre-season friendly ahead of the 2012–13 season.
Charlton also paid for Nick Pope to study sports science at the University of Roehampton, in addition to other studies he had planned to do at the University of Nottingham before signing for Charlton. Pope signed a new two-year deal with Charlton Athletic on February 7, 2012.
He made his Charlton and professional debut on 4 May 2013, as a 71st-minute replacement for David Button in a 4–1 home win for Charlton against already relegated Bristol City in the Championship.
In September 2013, Nick Pope signed a new three-year deal with Charlton, stating, “It’s a major club, so to have a long-term future assured, for me, as a player progressing, it’s something you seek for.” Pope signed a new four-year deal with Charlton Athletic on June 5, 2014, ensuring his future with the club until June 2018.
Pope signed a loan contract with Isthmian League Premier Division team Harrow Borough until September 17, 2011. In 19 appearances, Pope kept three clean sheets and saved two penalty kicks. Pope was supposed to join Conference Premier club Kettering Town in December 2011. But the deal fell through due to Kettering being subject to a transfer embargo.
As a result, he joined Conference South team Welling United on a 28-day loan on 21 December 2011. Pope signed a one-month loan with Cambridge United in the Conference Premier on March 7, 2013. He made nine appearances for the club, keeping four clean sheets in the process.
Nick Pope signed a one-month loan with Conference Premier team Aldershot Town on September 26, 2013. He joined League Two team York City on a one-month loan on November 21, 2013, but was returned by Charlton after only two games. Pope returned to York on loan for the remainder of the 2013–14 season on January 16, 2014, recording 16 clean sheets in 24 outings.
Pope joined Bury on loan for the remainder of the 2014–15 season on January 6, 2015. On 17 January 2015, he made his debut in a 1–1 home draw with Wycombe Wanderers. He appeared in 22 games as Bury gained promotion after finishing third in League Two.
Nick Pope signed a three-year contract with newly promoted Premier League team Burnley on July 19, 2016, for an unknown price. Pope made his Premier League debut on September 10, 2017, in the first half of a 1–0 home win over Crystal Palace, replacing the injured Tom Heaton. The next week, on 16 September 2017, he made his Premier League debut in a 1–1 away draw against Liverpool.
Pope signed a new contract extension with Burnley until 2020 on October 9. On July 26, 2018, he dislocated his shoulder after colliding with Sam Cosgrove during Burnley’s 1–1 draw away to Aberdeen in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round.
Nick Pope signed a new deal with Burnley in May 2019, which will originally last until 2023. He had a productive 2019–20 season, playing every minute of Burnley’s Premier League campaign. He preserved 15 clean sheets this season, but was denied the Golden Glove trophy as Burnley surrendered two goals in the season’s final game, a 1–2 home loss to Brighton & Hove Albion.

International Career
Pope was called up for the first time to the England national team on March 15, 2018. He was included in England’s 23-man team for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Pope made his debut in a pre-tournament friendly against Costa Rica on June 7, 2018. He came in as a 65th-minute substitute.
On November 17, 2019, Nick Pope made his first competitive international debut in a 4–0 win over Kosovo in the last game of UEFA Euro 2020 qualification. After England defeated Albania 2–0 in March 2021, Pope became the first goalie in England history to preserve a clean sheet in his first six outings.
The Suffolk-born keeper rose quickly through the England ranks, first being called up in March 2018 after making his Premier League debut for Burnley at the start of the 2017-18 season.
Nick Pope’s form for the Clarets caught the eye, with his stats putting him among the top goalkeepers in England as they finished seventh in the top flight during the 2017-18 season, and after numerous trips to Turf Moor, Gareth Southgate chose the former Charlton Athletic man who had started his career in non-league with Bury Town.
With loan spells at Harrow Borough, Welling, Aldershot, Cambridge United, and York City, the farmer’s son has worked his way up through the ranks, and it was a proud moment for the Soham stopper when he made his England debut as a second-half substitute against Costa Rica at Elland Road in June 2018. Nick Pope went on to become a popular character in the Three Lions side.
Unfortunately, a nasty injury suffered only weeks after his return from Russia in a Europa League match against Aberdeen kept Pope out for much of the next season, and he lost his spot in the Burnley team to another England competitor, Tom Heaton.
But, with Heaton leaving for Aston Villa in 2019 and Pope returning to the Clarets, it wasn’t long before he was back in the England fold. His efforts for Burnley and in England training were rewarded as he earned his full international debut in the game against Kosovo in November 2019.
