Club Career
Before transferring to Al Ahly, El Shenawy started his career in the youth system at his local club El Hamoul SC. He joined the team in 2002 when he was fourteen years old. Before being let go by the club in 2009, he was unable to play a single league game for the senior team. After being freed, he signed up with Tala’ea El Gaish, an Egyptian Premier League team. El Shenawy spent time on loan with Haras El-Hodood when he was at El Gaish.
2013 saw El Shenawy join Petrojet. His performance in the 2015–16 season, which included a run of seven games without allowing a goal and a league-high eleven clean sheets in twenty–two appearances, prompted his previous team Al Ahly to make an effort at signing him.
He returned to Al Ahly in July 2016 and quickly overcame Sherif Ekramy to earn a spot in the starting lineup. In January 2018, he kept five clean sheets in seven games, including a 1-0 victory over Al-Masry in the 2017 Egyptian Super Cup. In the Egyptian Premier League, he also had the best proportion of clean sheets of any goalie.
He assisted the team in winning the Egyptian Premier League in each of his first four seasons. He also won the 2019–20 CAF Champions League to qualify for the 2020 FIFA Club World Cup, where he managed to defeat Palmeiras in a 3-2 penalty shootout after the game finished scoreless after 90 minutes by saving two penalties.
International Career
El Shenawy played for Egypt’s national under-20 football team at the 2007 African Youth Championship after representing his country at the under-18 level. He was frequently called up to the senior Egypt team starting in 2013 before making his international debut in a 2-1 friendly loss to Portugal. Ahmed Nagy, the goalkeeping coach for the national team, praised him for his performance in the game “He played fantastically, and I am thrilled with how he turned out. He should be a member of the national team.”
He was included in Egypt’s preliminary team for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia in May of that year.
Prior to the tournament, he participated in friendly warm-up games against Colombia and Belgium. Essam El-Hadary and club teammate Ekramy lost to him for the starting goalkeeper position for their opening encounter against Uruguay, which was only his fourth cap.
He was chosen Man of the Match in the first game after making multiple saves in a 1-0 loss, but he refused to receive the trophy in the Budweiser-sponsored player’s tunnel after the game and instead had it photographed. El Shenawy is prohibited from consuming alcohol since he is a Muslim. Later, he was persuaded to accept the honor as a “historic” medal by teammate Ekramy and Egyptian team director Ihab Leheta, but he again rejected it.
