Miles was born in Downingtown, Pennsylvania on February 20, 1987, and grew up in Pennsylvania, Florida, and New Jersey. Merry, Teller’s mother, is a real estate salesperson, and Michael, his father, is a nuclear power plant engineer. Erin and Dana are his two elder sisters. Miles was a member of a rock band at Lecanto High School. He was also the president of the theatrical club and a drummer for a church youth group band.
He also played the piano and guitar and was a member of the baseball team, with the goal of making baseball a professional career. Teller supplemented his income while in high school by working as a waitress at a neighborhood restaurant called Crackers. He appeared in his high school’s performance of “Footloose,” and would later go on to star in the film.

He began performing in short films after graduating from Tisch, and he guest-starred on the television sitcom “The Unusuals” in 2009. He rose to prominence with his award-winning performance in the feature film “Rabbit Hole” in 2010. Teller was chosen for the job by Nicole Kidman. He has been continuously working on feature film projects since then. For his role in “The Spectacular Now,” he and co-star Shailene Woodley received the Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Award for Dramatic Acting.
