Early Life

Winslow was the son of Verdie and Robert Winslow and was born in Spokane, Washington. He attended the Lisa Maile School of Acting, Modeling, and Imaging after growing up at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane.

Winslow had few friends as a child, according to his own recollection. He would imitate the noises of motors, animals, farts, and anything else that generated noise to pass the time. Following high school and college, he worked in bars and theatres, where his sound impersonation talents earned him praise and enough money to relocate to Hollywood to perform his show.

He had his debut appearance on television on The Gong Show when he did impressions of Benji the movie dog, Star Trek, and Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze.” He is well recognised for his portrayal of Lavell Jones in the Police Academy film and television series. After being spotted an opening for Count Basie, he was cast in the role. Michael Winslow’s “I Am My Own Walkman” was released on Island Records in 1985. In Australia, the song reached number 60.

Charles L. Campbell and Robert Rutledge won the Best Sound Effects Editing Oscar in 1986 for their work on Back to the Future.

Winslow made his film debut in 1987 as a radar operator in Spaceballs, in which he provides all of the sound effects solos during one sequence. Winslow saved the picture money, according to Mel Brooks (who wrote, directed, produced, and co-starred in the film). Winslow is a motivational speaker as well. Winslow has hosted the motion-picture television series “Way Back Wednesday with Winslow” on the cable superstation WGN America since the fall of 2008, which highlights largely films from the 1980s. He still does stand-up comedy all around the world. In 2010, Michael Winslow released his own iPhone and iPod Touch applications, bringing his sound effects and humour to a mobile platform for the first time.

When the gadget is swung in a combat motion, ThatsKungFu produces Winslow’s kung fu fighting noises. Winslow developed video, ringtones, sound effects, and mini games for NoizeyMan, which is advertised as the “World’s Noiziest App.” In 2011, Winslow collaborated on a smartphone game called Wizard Ops Chapter 1 with Orlando, Florida-based game production firm Phyken Media. He provided all of the sound effects for the game. In addition, he provided the voice for Wizard Ops Tactics, a turn-based tactical game that serves as a spiritual sequel to the prior game.

During GEICO Insurance’s “we hired a star” marketing campaign, he was also featured in a commercial. Winslow auditioned for America’s Got Talent’s sixteenth season in 2021. He made a cameo appearance on the Talent Recap Show after his audition aired when he demonstrated how to produce some of his characteristic noises. During the semi-finals, Winslow was eliminated.

Winslow made his feature film debut in 1980 with “Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie.” Evelyn Guerrero, Paul Reubens, Sy Kramer, Edie and Bob McClurg, and John Steadman, among others, appeared in the film alongside the titular comedic pair. Winslow followed up with “Nice Dreams,” a film starring Cheech and Chong and co-starring Stacy Keach. He then starred alongside Robert Carradine in the thriller “TAG: The Assassination Game,” in which Linda Hamilton had her feature picture debut. Winslow’s most recognised performance as Cadet Larvell Jones in “Police Academy” came in 1984. The picture was a tremendous box-office hit because of a large ensemble cast that included Steve Guttenberg, Kim Cattrall, Bubba Smith, Donovan Scott, and Andrew Rubin, among others.

From 1985 until 1994, “Police Academy” spawned six sequels, becoming a cult classic in the process. Winslow featured in four more films during the same year as “Police Academy.” He portrayed Lippy, an eccentric cocaine dealer, in the New York City gangster thriller “Alphabet City.” In the dramedy “Grandview, U.S.A.,” he starred with Jamie Lee Curtis, Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Troy Donahue, and M. Emmet Walsh in a huge ensemble cast. “Lovelines,” in which he portrayed the operator of a romance telephone service, and “Gremlins,” in which he gave the voice of Mogwai, were Winslow’s other two credits that year. After that, Winslow voiced “Starchaser: The Legend of Orin,” an animated fantasy film released in 1985.

He played a radar operator in Mel Brooks’ spoof film “Spaceballs” in 1987, doing all of the sound effects himself. Winslow finished the decade with roles in “Buy & Cell,” “Zärtliche Chaoten,” and “Starke Zeiten” in West Germany.

In the 1990s, Winslow appeared in the adventure comedy “Think Big” as well as the Tommy Chong comedy “Far Out Man.” He provided voice work for the children’s animation feature “The Trumpet of the Swan” in the early 2000s and portrayed an officer in “The Biggest Fan,” starring Dream Street. Following that, he appeared in “Lenny the Wonder Dog,” “The Great Buck Howard,” and the National Lampoon feature “RoboDoc.” The Hungarian horror comedy “Gingerclown,” the 2016 comedy “Characterz,” and the action comedy “Killing Hasselhoff,” in which he plays himself, are among Winslow’s latter credits.

In the early 1990s, Winslow voiced the animated series “New Kids on the Block” on television. During this period, he also co-starred with Bud Spencer and Philip Michael Thomas in the short-lived sitcom “Extralarge.” Winslow repeated his role as Sgt. Larvell Jones in “Police Academy: The Series,” a comedy offshoot of the film franchise, later in the decade. In a 2006 episode of the animated sketch comedy show “Robot Chicken,” he reprised the role.

Other television appearances by Winslow include the 2015 science-fiction horror flicks “Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!” and “Lavalantula.” He auditioned for the 16th season of NBC’s talent programme “America’s Got Talent” in 2021. Winslow has also presented the WGN series “Way Back Wednesday with Winslow” since 2008, which features largely 1980s films.

Winslow has worked on mobile apps in addition to movies and television. He released his own sound effects applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch in 2010. When the smartphone is swung, the ThatsKungFu app makes kung-fu combat noises, while the NoizeyMan app features Winslow’s sound effects, ringtones, games, and movies. Winslow also worked with Phyken Media on the smartphone game “Wizard Ops Chapter 1,” for which he produced sound effects. Later, he voiced “Wizard Ops Tactics” for the company. Winslow has also been in high-profile ads for GEICO and Cadbury over his career.
