Career
In 2001, Freeman had a big break when he was cast as Tim Canterbury in the Ricky Gervais/Stephen Merchant comedy “The Office.” Although this earned him an immediate celebrity in the UK (and, to a lesser extent, throughout the world), it also made it impossible for him to advance in his profession. According to Martin, the part was an impediment as he attempted to advance into more dramatic film and television ventures.
Following his appearance in “The Office,” Freeman went on to feature in shows such as “Hardware” and films such as “Ali G Indahouse” and “Love Actually.” His first major dramatic role was as Lord Shaftesbury in the 2003 television film “Charles II: The Power and The Passion.”
Other television ventures included “This Life,” “The Robinsons,” and “Black Books.” Martin appeared in films such as “The All Together” and the miniseries “Boy Meets Girl” around the end of the 2000s.
At this time, Freeman also began a streak of remarkable collaborations with his close friend Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright. He originally appears in “Shaun of the Dead” before making a brief appearance in “Hot Fuzz.” Martin had a far larger part in “The World’s End,” which completed the so-called “Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy.”
Another significant step forward for Freeman came in 2010 when he was cast as Doctor John Watson in the television series “Sherlock.” Benedict Cumberbatch played the main character, and the series received critical acclaim as well as a number of prizes. Freeman received special recognition, receiving both a BAFTA and a Primetime Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie.
As Freeman was receiving accolades for his work in “Sherlock,” he was simultaneously building his cinematic career. In 2012, he was cast as Bilbo Baggins in “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” the first episode of Peter Jackson’s new trilogy set in Middle Earth. Two sequels were released in 2013 and 2014, grossing a total of $2.935 billion at the movie office.
Despite the fact that reviewers thought the films were inferior to the “Lord of the Rings” film trilogy, they were enormously successful financially. Martin received Best Hero at the 2013 MTV Movie Awards for his role in the first film.
Following the conclusion of “The Hobbit” trilogy, Freeman took a part in the television series “Fargo,” portraying insurance salesman Lester Nygaard. Among other things, this garnered him a Golden Globe Award and an Emmy Award nomination. Martin then moved on to the stage, where he performed the lead in a West End production of “Richard III.”
Following another well-received appearance in the television film “The Eichmann Show,” Freeman’s career rose once more when he starred in “Captain America: Civil War” as CIA Agent Everett K. Ross. The film was a box office success, collecting $1.153 billion and getting rave reviews.
Following his appearance in the Netflix film “Cargo,” Freeman performed in another West End production called “Work of Love.” Martin returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with “Black Panther” in 2018, repeating his previous role as Everett K. Ross.
This picture performed even better at the box office than “Civil War,” collecting $1.347 billion and receiving great acclaim from reviewers. Freeman joins the cast of the show “Breeders” in 2020.
