Marko Livaja is a Croatian professional footballer who plays as a forward for Hajduk Split and the Croatia national team. He was born on August 26, 1993. Life of Marko Livaja

Marko Livaja is a Croatian footballer who currently plays as a forward for Hajduk Split and the Croatia national team. On August 26, 1993, he was born. He has represented his country at every level, from the Under-15s to the senior squad.

Before joining the Dinamo Zagreb Academy in the summer of 2008, Livaja played for lower-tier Croatian teams GOK Katel Gomilica and NK Omladinac Vranjic. Prior to joining Dinamo, he received a call from his hometown club, Hajduk Split Academy. After making the whole Hajduk club, Livaja was sold to Internazionale in 2010, and he was loaned to Swiss side FC Lugano in 2011.

On January 31, 2013, Livaja was loaned to Atalanta, with Inter holding half of his registration rights. Inter paid Cesena €1.5 million for Livaja but sold half of his rights to Atalanta for €2.5 million as part of Ezequiel Schelotto’s €6 million deal.

Rubin Kazan signed Livaja to a five-year contract. He cost up to €6 million to the Russian Premier League squad. Later, AEK rejected an offer from Al Wahda.

Marko Livaja began his career with lower-tier Croatian clubs GOK Katel Gomilica and NK Omladinac Vranjic before joining the Dinamo Zagreb Academy in the summer of 2008.

However, before registering with Dinamo, he received a call from his local club Hajduk Split Academy, Dinamo’s long-standing rival, and relocated there. He was promoted to the entire Hajduk team in early 2010.

Internazionale

Marko Livaja was transferred to Internazionale in 2010 after making the entire Hajduk club, and he was loaned to Swiss side FC Lugano in 2011.

He was loaned to Cesena again in the summer of 2011 for €250,000 from Hajduk Split, and he made his Serie A debut for Cesena against Fiorentina in October 2011. Livaja represented Cesena in both their primary and youth teams.

He returned to Inter in January 2012 when Cesena sold him in a co-ownership agreement for €2.25 million. Livaja joined Inter Primavera after Andrea Stramaccioni was named coach of the main squad, winning the 2011-12 NextGen series.

Livaja’s first call-up to the first squad came on April 1, 2012, when he was an unused replacement in a 5-4 victory against Genoa at San Siro. In the 2012-13 season, Livaja made his debut against Pescara in the opening match of the season, and he made his first start against Roma in January 2013. During the first half of the season, he featured in six Serie A games without scoring a goal.

Marko Livaja had greater action in European games since he was the first choice striker for coach Stramaccioni’s 2012-13 UEFA Europa League group matches against Rubin Kazan, FK Partizan, and Neftchi Baku.

On 20 September 2012, he scored his first goal for Inter against Rubin Kazan, becoming Inter’s leading scorer in the group stage with four goals in six group matches. Inter came in second place in Group H with 11 points, three points behind Rubin Kazan.

Atalanta

Marko Livaja was loaned to Atalanta on January 31, 2013, with Inter keeping half of his registration rights. Inter paid Cesena €1.5 million for Livaja, but transferred half his rights to Atalanta for €2.5 million as part of Ezequiel Schelotto’s €6 million transaction.

Livaja made his debut for the new club on 10 February 2013 against Catania Calcio and scored his first two goals for them on Matchday 26 against A.S. Roma. He was left off the team list for Atalanta’s match against Sampdoria in April due to disciplinary grounds. On 7 April 2013, he made his debut against his former club Inter Milan, coming on as a second-half replacement.

Livaja was named Atalanta’s “Man of the Month” for February 2013 by the club’s supporters in April. Livaja was banned from the squad again on May 7th, before the match against Juventus, for a violation of discipline.

Rubin Kazan

Marko Livaja signed a five-year contract with Rubin Kazan on May 15, 2014. The Russian Premier League team spent up to €6 million for him. Rubin Kazan loaned him out to Serie A club Empoli on August 31, 2015.

His time did not go as planned, with Livaja scoring only once in 18 appearances for the Azzurri, four of which he started. That goal occurred on November 22nd, during a 2-2 away tie with Fiorentina.

Las Palmas

Marko Livaja signed a deal with La Liga club Las Palmas until June 2020 on July 14, 2016. Later that day, on August 22, he made his debut, scoring his first goals as Las Palmas defeated Valencia 4-2 at Mestalla Stadium. Then he went scoreless for 613 minutes in 10 matches until 4 December 2016, when he scored the team’s sole goal in a 1-1 away tie against Deportivo Alavés.

Livaja made his Copa del Rey debut the next year, on 10 January, in the return leg of the round of 16 against Atlético Madrid, scoring a brace in a 2-3 away win but 4-3 aggregate defeat.

Loan to AEK Athens

Marko Livaja was loaned to AEK Athens on July 1, 2017, for an initial loan price of €200,000, with a purchase option of €1.8 million for the summer of 2018. On July 25, 2017, he made his debut in a 2-0 home loss to CSKA Moscow in the first leg of the Champions League third qualifying round.

On September 28, 2017, he equalised for AEK in the 90th minute, his second in a 2-2 draw against Austria Wien in the UEFA Europa League group stage. He scored the lone goal in the “double-headed eagle” derby against PAOK on November 5, 2017. Marko Livaja earned a point for AEK in an away 1-1 derby against rivals Panathinaikos on November 19, 2017 with a stunning equaliser at the end of the game.

On November 27, 2017, he scored twice in a 3-0 home win over Platanias, propelling his club back to the top of the league standings. With his second-half goal on 3 December 2017, AEK defeated Levadiakos 2-0 to remain atop the 2017-18 Super League after 13 games. On 14 January 2018, he scored the first goal in a 3-1 home win over PAS Giannina.

He then scored in a 2-0 home win over Lamia. On March 4, 2018, he scored with his head in a fantastic right-wing cross from Rodrigo Galo, securing a 1-0 home victory against rivals Panionios.

In his debut season at AEK Athens, he won the Super League but lost the Greek Cup against PAOK. They advanced to the Round of 32 of the Europa League before Dynamo Kyiv knocked them out.

AEK Athens

2018–19 season

On 22 March 2018, AEK opted to activate Marko Livaja’s €1.8 million optional transfer clause, and the player would allegedly earn €700,000 per year until the summer of 2021. On 14 August 2018, he headed in from close range to make it 2-0, and despite Scott Sinclair bringing Celtic back into the game in the closing stages, AEK held on for dear life to advance to the UEFA Champions League playoffs to face Vidi in a 2-1 home win game against Celtic in the Champions League Third qualifying round, 2nd leg.

Two days later, an anonymous Italian team, subsequently revealed to be Sampdoria, proposed €8 million for the Croatian forward, but the team’s management declined. In a 2-0 away win against Apollon Smyrnis on 20 October 2018, Marko Livaja scored his first league goal since the season opener thanks to some fantastic build-up play from forward Viktor Klonaridis.

A week later, he added to the tally by converting a Lucas Boyé cross, and he added a fourth for Marinos Ouzounidis’ club in a 4-0 home win against Aris. On January 20, 2019, he began the scoring in a 3-0 home win over Asteras Tripolis.

Three days later, he came on as a sub and scored twice in a 5-0 home win over AO ChaniaKissamikos in the Greek Cup round of 16. His squad won 6-1 on aggregate and went to the competition’s quarterfinals. On the final day of the season, May 5, 2019, he scored in a 3-0 away win over Levadiakos.

2019–20 season

Marko Livaja scored and assisted when AEK defeated Universitatea Craiova to go to the 2019-20 Europa League play-off round. However despite his goal, the tie finished 3-3 on aggregate. Thus, AEK got eliminated on away goals. After an assist from Christos Albanis, he scored his first league goal of the season.

It was in a 2-3 away win over Asteras Tripolis on September 1, 2019. Livaja was in fine form on January 5, 2020. Thus, he scored two goals (one from the penalty spot) and won a penalty to lead AEK to a 3-1 home victory against struggling Panetolikos. He got the Match of the Match award. He scored a late penalty in a 4-0 home win over Panetolikos in the Greek Cup quarterfinals on February 19.

He skillfully twisted his man before beating Sokratis Dioudis with a powerful shot. Thus, he levelled the score in a 1-1 home draw game against Panathinaikos for the 2019-20 Superleague playoffs. He scored a header in a 2-1 home win over Atromitos on January 17, 2021. Livaja ended his AEK contract on February 17, 2021. He became surplus to requirements. It was owing to his reluctance to negotiate a contract extension.

Hajduk Split

Marko Livaja joined Croatian club Hajduk Split till the end of the season. In 17 games for Hajduk, he has seven goals and eight assists, helping the team qualify for the 2021-22 UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying stages.

Hajduk announced that Livaja has signed a new deal with the club until the summer of 2024. On December 21, 2021, the captains of 1. HNL named Marko Livaja the Best Footballer in Croatian First League. The Hajduk striker is the first Hajduk player to win the best player award since 2003. Then, Arijan Ademi had earned the accolade. Livaja ended the 2021-22 Croatian First Football League season with 28 goals, one more than Rijeka’s Josip Drmi, who had 21.

His 28 league goals set a new Hajduk record for a single season, surpassing Leo Lemei’s 26 in 1934/35 and Zlatko Vujovi’s 25. Livaja renewed his contract for four years in July 2022.
