Mario Gavranović, born November 24, 1989, is a Swiss professional footballer who plays as a forward for Kayserispor in the Super Lig and for the Swiss national team.

Gavranović is a Bosnian Croat who was born in Gradaac, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He began his professional career in 2006 with Lugano and has since played for eight different teams. He is most remembered for his stint with Zurich, when he made 90 appearances and scored 26 goals.

The Kayserispor attacker has represented Swiss junior teams at numerous events, and he made his senior debut against Bulgaria in a Euro 2012 qualifier on March 26, 2011. He was named to the Brazil World Cup team but did not play much due to a knee injury. Mario was also included to the senior team for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Club Career

Early Career

Gavranović began his career with AS Vezia before being noticed by Team Ticino U18, FC Lugano’s development programme. In the 2006–07 season, he made his professional debut with FC Lugano in the Swiss Challenge League. He scored eight goals in 21 games during his sophomore season. Mario joined Yverdon-Sport in the summer of 2008 and scored eight goals in only 20 appearances. He transferred to Neuchâtel Xamax for the 2008–09 season.

Schalke

Gavranović departed Neuchâtel Xamax on 1 February 2010 after a great debut with the team, scoring eight goals in 17 games. He scored a crucial goal for Schalke 04 against Valencia in the Round of 16 of the Champions League, leading his club to a 4–2 victory and a place in the quarter-finals. On August 31, 2011, Gavranović joined fellow Bundesliga club Mainz on a season-long loan. Mainz allegedly paid €200,000 to obtain his services, and the loan included a €1.5 million permanent move.

FC Zürich

Mario Gavranović returned to Schalke after only five games on loan, and opted to renounce his contract in May 2012, moving on a free transfer to FC Zürich in the summer. On 15 July 2012, he made his debut for Zürich and scored his first goal from the penalty spot in the same match, a 1–1 tie with FC Luzern.

He scored the game-winning goal against defending champions FC Basel in the fifth round of the Swiss Super League on August 11, 2013. On September 15, he scored Zürich’s first goal as the team rallied from behind twice to upset FC Stade Lausanne Ouchy 3-2 in the second round of the Swiss Cup.

Rijeka

Gavranović transferred to HNK Rijeka in Croatia on January 18, 2016. He attended the club’s pre-season training camp in Dubai after signing a two-and-a-half-year deal. On 12 February 2016, Mario Gavranović scored on his official club debut, converting a cross from Roman Bezjak in the 25th minute to increase Rijeka’s advantage over Lokomotiva. Gavranović scored 40 goals in 80 games in two years with the club.

Dinamo Zagreb

Mario Gavranović joined Dinamo Zagreb on January 5, 2018, as part of a player exchange deal involving Domagoj Pavii and Luka Capan. He agreed to a three-year deal with the club and chose the number 11 jersey. He was keen to earn a spot in Switzerland’s team for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia after joining a new club and having a great spring season.

Mario Gavranović disclosed during his formal introduction in Zagreb that all of his family members are Dinamo supporters, and that he was encouraged to follow the club from a young age. On March 4, he scored his first goal for the club in a 1–0 win over Slaven Belupo.

On March 7, he scored against his previous team Rijeka, although Dinamo went on to lose 4–1. He scored again in a 2–0 win against Rude on March 17, and then again in a 4–0 away triumph over Istra 1961 on April 8. Gavranović scored twice in Dinamo’s 2–1 away triumph over rivals Hajduk Split, moving the club closer to a 19th league title.

He was let go by Dinamo at the conclusion of his contract on July 30, 2020. However, due to the injury of the club’s first striker, Bruno Petkovi, he returned to the club just three weeks later. On 17 October, he scored his first hat-trick for Dinamo in a 3–2 win over Gorica.

Kayserispor

In August 2021, Mario decided to make his move to Turkey to play for Kayserispor in the Turkish Süper Lig. He plays as a forward there. He signed the deal for 720,000 Euros.

International Career

On May 13, 2014, Gavranović became a part of the final 23-man roster for the World Cup in Brazil. He suffered a major knee injury in training on June 29, keeping him out for the rest of the World Cup and until early 2015. Gavranović got picked in Switzerland’s 23-man team for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia by manager Vladimir Petkovi.

He made his World Cup debut against Serbia in the second Group E encounter, joining at the start of the second half and providing an injury time assist to Xherdan Shaqiri for a 2–1 comeback win.

Mario Gavranović was chosen to Petkovi’s 26-man UEFA Euro 2020 squad. In the 73rd minute of the Round of 16 encounter against France on June 28, 2021, he was substituted by Shaqiri. He scored the third goal for Switzerland, tying the game at 3–3. Switzerland won 5–4 after extra time and a penalty shootout (with Gavranović successfully scoring his penalty) and advanced to the quarter-finals.
