Manisha Koirala was born on 16 August 1970 in Kathmandu, Nepal. Her father’s name is Prakash Koirala, who has served as the cabinet minister of Nepal for Environment, Science, and Technology, while her mother’s name is Sushma Koirala, a homemaker. Her grandfather Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala was the Prime Minister of Nepal from 1959 to 1960. She has one brother Siddharth Koirala, who is also in the field of acting.

Manisha Koirala starred in a number of unsuccessful movies until Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s romantic venture 1942: A Love Story in 1994 and Mani Ratnam’s Tamil drama Bombay in 1995 came out. Her performance in the latter was particularly appreciated and received the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance.
Manisha was also seen in more commercial movies, including Akele Hum Akele Tum in 1995 opposite Aamir Khan. Koirala had a particularly great year in 1996. Manisha earned positive reviews for her performance in the drama Agni Sakshi, where she portrayed the role of a battered wife on the run from her mentally sick husband, played by Nana Patekar.
In the same year, Manisha acted in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s directorial debut, Khamoshi: The Musical. In the next year, Koirala played the leading role alongside Kajol and Bobby Deol in the thriller Gupt: The Hidden Truth. The movie became one of the biggest hits of the year.
