Ma Huateng, better known as Pony Ma, is a Chinese oligarch and billionaire businessman who was born on October 29, 1971. He is the founder, chairman, and CEO of Tencent, one of the largest Internet and technology firms, as well as one of the largest investing, gaming, and entertainment conglomerates in the world. Tencent is also one of the most valuable corporations in Asia. WeChat, the largest mobile messaging app in China, is created by this firm, and its subsidiaries offer media, entertainment, payment solutions, mobile devices, internet-related services, value-added services, and online advertising services both domestically and internationally. He was recognised as one of the world’s most influential persons by Time magazine in 2007, 2014, and 2018, as well as one of the most powerful by Forbes in 2015. Ma Huateng was named one of the year’s top executives by Fortune in 2017. He was recognised by CEOWORLD magazine as one of the “Most Powerful People In The World” in 2018. He served as a representative to both the 12th National People’s Congress and the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Congress. Ma, one of “Fortune world’s top executives,” is renowned for his reserved demeanour as opposed to that of Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba and a fellow Chinese billionaire. Ma is frequently referred to as a “aggressive acquisitor” and has been likened to American billionaire Warren Buffett due to their comparable investing strategies. He has a net worth of $37.2 billion as of March 2022, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The first person from China to join Forbes’ top 10 richest list, his net worth momentarily topped that of Larry Page and Sergey Brin (individually) in November 2017. However, since then, Page and Brin have both outperformed Michael John Mars in terms of wealth.

Professional Career

Ma’s first position was as a software developer for pagers at China Motion Telecom Development, a provider of telecommunications services and goods. He allegedly made $176 each month. Additionally, he was employed by Shenzhen Runxun Communications Co. Ltd. in the division responsible for Internet calling service research and development.

Tencent

Ma Huateng went on to co-found Tencent in 1998 with four of her former classmates. After Ma attended a demonstration for ICQ, the first Internet instant messaging service created in 1996 by an Israeli startup, the business released its first product. The concept served as inspiration for Ma and his team, who in February 1999 released a programme with a similar interface but a slightly different name: OICQ (or, Open ICQ). By the end of 1999, the service had amassed over a million registered users, making it one of the biggest of its kind in China. The product gained popularity swiftly. In an interview with China Daily in 2009, he referred to the parallels between ICQ and OICQ and said, quoting an Isaac Newton quotation, “If I have seen farther, it is through standing on the shoulders of giants,” in reference to the establishment of Tencent. Ma recalled, “We believed our product had a future, but at that time we just couldn’t afford it.” Ma discussed selling the business and even requested bank loans to address the issue. OICQ, a coveted service from Tencent, was provided without charge, thus the business turned to venture investors to help pay its rising operating expenses. Ma went to the US investment firm IDC and the Hong Kong telecom company Pacific Century CyberWorks (PCCW), which paid US$2.2 million for 40% of Tencent’s shares.  Ma enhanced the messaging platform by enabling QQ users to send messages on mobile devices since the market for pagers was dwindling. After then, agreements with telecom carriers who agreed to split message costs led to 80 per cent of the company’s income.

AOL

After AOL (America Online) acquired ICQ in 1998, the firm claimed that OICQ’s domain names OICQ.com and OICQ.net violated ICQ’s trademark and launched arbitration against Tencent with the National Arbitration Forum in the United States. Following the AOL lawsuit, Ma made the decision to broaden Tencent’s line of business. Tencent launched its own site (QQ.com) and entered the online gaming sector in 2003. Tencent had 74 per cent of the Chinese instant messaging market by 2004. It prompted Ma to launch Tencent on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Ma soon rose to become one of the wealthiest individuals in China’s telecom sector. His business raised $200 million in its IPO in June. Tencent established Paipai.com, a C2C site that directly competes with Alibaba, at Ma’s urging in 2005. Ma set up two rival engineering teams in 2010 and gave them the task of developing a new product, imitating Microsoft. One team introduced WeChat, a text messaging and group chat software, after two months. WeChat debuted in January 2011. With a US$1.5 billion profit margin, online games like Legend of Yulong and Legend of Xuanyuan increased sales by more than half, reaching US$5.1 billion. Ma made the announcement that Tencent will establish an “internet hospital” in Wuzhen that would offer long-distance diagnosis and medication delivery in December 2015.

Involvement in politics

Ma served in the 12th National People’s Congress. Also, he is a deputy to the 5th Shenzhen Municipal People’s Congress, according to the official Tencent website. Nevertheless, Ma was cited as stating during a tech conference in Singapore on censorship “Online businesses from any nation that handle information security must follow a specified set of standards and behave responsibly. Otherwise, it can result in rumours, slander, and disagreements between nations as well as within residents. Online management is therefore increasingly necessary.”
