Early Life
Luke Albert Combs was born in Huntersville, North Carolina on March 2, 1990 (age 32). He is the son of Rhonda and Chester Combs, who subsequently relocated to Asheville, North Carolina when he was eight years old. He has been a vocalist since he was a toddler. Combs played football and sang with several vocal ensembles while attending A. C. Reynolds High School, including a solo performance in the world-famous Carnegie Hall. He later attended Appalachian State University, where he worked as a bouncer before obtaining stage time in the same pub.
At the Parthenon Cafe, he performed his first country music event. He dropped out with less than a month remaining in his senior year to pursue a career in country music. He eventually relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue a singing career.
Music Career
In February 2014, Luke Combs released his debut EP, The Way She Rides. Later that year, he released Can I Get an Outlaw, his second EP. Combs’ first song, “Hurricane,” debuted at number 46 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in 2016, selling 15,000 copies in its first week. Combs released his third EP, This One’s for You, in November 2015. Combs was named one of the Sounds Like Nashville’s “Artists to Watch” in late 2016.
Combs secured a deal with Sony Music Nashville, and “Hurricane,” the first single from This One’s for You, was re-released on Columbia Nashville. On May 15, 2017, “Hurricane” debuted at number one on the country radio airplay chart and remained there for two weeks.
Combs released his major-label debut album, This One for You, on Columbia Nashville and River House Artists in June 2017. In its first week, the album debuted at number one on Billboard’s Top Country Albums and number five on the US Billboard 200. On June 19, 2017, the album’s second single, “When It Rains It Pours,” was released to country radio. In October 2017, it peaked at number one on the Country Airplay chart.
On January 8, 2018, the album’s third song, “One Number Away,” was released to country radio.
In June 2018, Luke Combs released a deluxe edition titled This One’s for You Too, which included five extra tracks, two of which (“She Got the Best of Me” and “Beautiful Crazy”) were released as singles and both peaked at number one. “Beautiful Crazy” debuted at number one on Country Airplay in February 2019, giving Combs five number-one hits on the Billboard country chart in his first five singles. The song also topped three other country charts: Hot Country Songs, Country Streaming Songs, and Country Digital Song Sales.
On June 11, 2019, Combs was asked to become the Grand Ole Opry’s newest member.
This One’s for You spent its 44th week at the top of Top Country Albums in August 2019, breaking the record for the longest reign at the top of that chart by a male artist.
On November 8, 2019, his second album, What You See Is What You Get, was released. The singles “Beer Never Broke My Heart,” “Even Though I’m Leaving,” “Does to Me,” a duet with Eric Church, and “Lovin’ on You” all achieved number one on the US Country chart.
Combs released the track “Six Feet Apart” in May 2020. The song soon gained popularity among listeners as it depicted the difficulties of living during the COVID-19 epidemic.
Combs stated in June 2020 that his next single would be “Lovin’ on You,” which would appear on both his second album and the EP The Prequel, which preceded the album.
Combs announced the release of a deluxe edition of What You See Is What You Get, titled What You See Ain’t Always What You Get, featuring five new tracks on October 23, 2020. The song “Forever After All” broke country music streaming records on Apple Music and Spotify.
