Club Career

Early Career

Honda, who was born and reared in Settsu, had played for the junior level team at Gamba Osaka but had not been elevated to the young squad. Honda participated in the 2004 J.League Cup as a Special Designated Youth Player while a student at Seiryo High School. He started his professional career in 2005 with J1 League team Nagoya Grampus Eight after finishing high school.

VVV-Venlo

Honda and Eredivisie team VVV-Venlo agreed to a two-and-a-half-year contract on January 16, 2008. He faced relegation for the first time in his professional career during his first six months at VVV when his new team was demoted to the Eerste Divisie, the second tier.

He contributed to the team’s return to the Eredivisie in the 2008–09 season by scoring 16 goals in 36 league games. Among the supporters of the team, he was known as Keizer Keisuke (literally, Emperor Keisuke). Additionally, Honda brought Tetsuro Kiyooka, his agent, to VVV-Venlo two years after introducing him to Maya Yoshida in 2008.

Botafogo

Honda joined Botafogo, a team in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, on January 31, 2020. On March 15 in a 1-1 tie with Bangu in the Campeonato Carioca, he made his debut and scored his first goal, opening the score from a penalty kick.

In addition to thanking and apologizing to the supporters, he announced his departure from the team on December 28, three months before his contract was set to expire. He expressed his frustration with the club’s board’s decisions and the lack of results, noting that it had changed head coaches four times during the season. Over the course of all competitions, he made 27 appearances and scored three goals.

Portimonense

Honda confirmed an agreement with Portimonense of the Primeira Liga on February 4, 2021. Two days later, the agreement was formally announced, with Honda joining the Portuguese team on a six-month contract with a one-year extension option.

Although Honda had spent less than two months as a free agent, Portimonense was unable to register him in the league due to LPFP regulations that required them to have been in that status for at least three months in order to be registered outside of the transfer window period. As a result, the deal fell through. On February 11, he peacefully split from the club.

2010 FIFA World Cup

During the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Honda gained notoriety and emerged as the nation’s freshest prospect. In Japan’s opening encounter against Cameroon, he finished off Daisuke Matsui’s cross into the upper left corner of the net for the game’s lone goal.

He won the FIFA Man of the Match Award for his contribution to the match, and Japan’s 1-0 victory became the country’s first World Cup victory away from home. In the 17th minute of the last group stage match against Denmark, he struck a fantastic free kick from 30 yards out.

In the 88th minute, after making his way into the penalty area, he turned provider for Shinji Okazaki with a Cruyff Turn to make the score 3-1 in Japan. His efforts earned him the “Man of the Match” award once more and advanced Japan to the knockout round. Japan lost to Paraguay in their round of 16 encounters, losing 3-5 in penalties after the game ended scoreless after extra time.
