Von D has a brother, Michael, and a sister, Karoline. She relocated to the Inland Empire with her family when she was four years old and grew up in Colton, California. Von D began classical piano lessons at the age of six.
Kat Von D attributes her musical and artistic inspiration to her grandmother, Clara von Drachenberg, as well as the culture of San Bernardino County as a key impact on her tattoo art and style.
At the age of 12, she began listening to the Ramones, Misfits, and other punk rock bands. She received her first tattoo at the age of 14 and dropped out of school at the age of 16 to pursue a career as a tattoo artist.
Von D was taken to Provo Canyon School for six months when she was 15, where she claims she was abused. Paris Hilton attended Provo Canyon School, and she claimed to have been mistreated there.
Personal Life
Von D chose to stop drinking in July 2007 because her drinking began to jeopardise her job. “Getting sober was not easy for me,” Von D said, “and I still clearly remember the physical anguish from withdrawals, the terrible want to die, and the overpowering sense of loneliness I had on the day I chose to quit.”
HIM, Misfits, Turbonegro, ZZ Top, Guns N’ Roses, AC/DC, Kent, Slayer, Mike Got Spiked, and “Slutallica,” a modified Metallica logo, are among the bands Von D has tattooed on her body.
She had cameo appearances in the music videos for HIM’s “Killing Loneliness,” Alkaline Trio’s “Help Me,” GUNSHIP’s “Black Blood Red Kiss,” and Cholo Goth band Prayers’ “Black Leather.” Von D also mentions Lemmy Kilmister, The Mars Volta, and Selena as some of her favourite musicians.

In June 2018, Von D provoked outrage when she stated on Instagram that she would refuse to vaccinate her future kid and would raise her on a vegan diet.
She later retracted such remarks in March 2020, claiming she made a mistake, was “totally uneducated” about vaccines, and is “not anti-vaxxer at all.”
Kat Von D Education

Professional Career
Von D starred in two seasons of Miami Ink for TLC, a reality television show recorded at 305 Ink in Miami. After fellow artist Darren Brass fractured his elbow and was unable to tattoo, she was granted a spot on the show. She had a falling out with Ami James while on the programme, which led to her leaving the shop and the show.
She went on to have her own TLC series, LA Ink, which documented her work at her Hollywood, California tattoo studio, High Voltage Tattoo. She set a Guinness World Record for the most tattoos given by a single individual in 24 hours on the show, with a total of 400.
The project, which was completed in December 2007, featured a Von D-designed logo for the city of Los Angeles, with revenues going to the Vitamin Angels children’s blindness charity. TLC announced the discontinuation of LA Ink on August 18, 2011.
The show aired for four seasons, finishing on September 15, 2011. Von D has stated that the cancellation was due to her decision not to continue with the programme.
High Voltage Tattoo, a collection of her artworks and tattoos with a preface by Nikki Sixx of Mötley Crüe, was released in January 2009 and hit #6 on The New York Times Best Seller list.
The book was defined by Von D as “I’m not writing an autobiography since I’m too young for that. However, this is only a visual representation of my artistic history. So you can see anything from my six-year-old doodles to never-before-seen tattoos.”
Her second book, The Tattoo Chronicles, is an illustrated journal that chronicles a year in her life and debuted at #3 on The New York Times’ “Hardcover Advice & Miscellaneous” best-seller list on October 26, 2010.

In August 2016, the company debuted Project Chimps, a limited-edition lipstick with 20% of proceeds going to Project Chimps, an organisation committed to providing care for retired research chimps.
Because the word “Selektion” is controversial and inappropriate in its native Germany, where it was a term used by Nazis to choose which individuals would be put to work or killed upon arrival at concentration camps during World War II, her makeup line sparked controversy after the release of a lipstick called “Selektion.”
As a result of the backlash, the lipstick was renamed “Beloved.” The name “Selektion” brought attention to other ostensibly insensitive behaviours, prompting The Forward to label her as “anti-Jew.” Von D received more backlash when she dubbed a lipstick “Celebutard.” Sephora promptly removed the lipstick from their stores and apologised.
The MusInk Tattoo Convention and Music Festival, which debuted in 2008, was founded by Von D. Musink is a tattoo, music, and art event for people of all ages in Southern California. Von D established the art gallery and shop Wonderland Gallery next door to High Voltage Tattoo on September 2, 2010.
In the fall of 2011, she launched the KVD Los Angeles and Kat Von D Los Angeles apparel brands in the United States and Canada, with the latter extending globally the following year.

She sang lead vocals on the song “Black Leather” by the electronic music duo Prayers in 2016, and she also appears in the video for the song.
In 2018, she narrated Chris Delforce’s animal rights documentary Dominion with Rooney Mara, Sia, Sadie Sink, and Joaquin Phoenix. Von D stated on January 16, 2020 that she has sold her namesake cosmetics line to its parent firm, Kendo Brands (a subsidiary of LVMH). “KVD Vegan Beauty” will be the new name of the company.
The initials KVD now stand for “Kindness, Vegan Beauty, and Discovery (and Doing Good),” according to the firm. On Tuesday, March 2, 2021, the company rebranded to “KVD Beauty,” with KVD standing for “Kara,” “Vertias,” and “Decora.” This means “Value,” “Truth,” and “Beauty” in English.
