Football Career

Club Career

Jordan Pickford joined Sunderland’s Academy when he was eight years old and progressed through the age groups until earning a two-year scholarship in 2010. He was promoted from the Academy to the reserve team the following year.

Pickford earned his first professional deal with the club in 2011. He secured a contract extension with the club the following year. Jordan Pickford joined Darlington on loan in time to make his debut against Fleetwood Town on 21 January 2012, playing the entire 1–0 home loss.

The initial one-month loan was later extended to the end of April. He went on to make 17 appearances for demoted Darlington. Jordan Pickford then signed for Conference Premier team Alfreton Town on a month-long loan on February 25, 2013, to cover for Phil Barnes, who was injured. The next day, he made his debut in a 5–1 victory over Hyde United.

His loan with the club was then extended until the conclusion of the season. Jordan kept 5 clean sheets in 12 games throughout this period. Jordan Pickford completed another loan agreement, this time with League Two club Burton Albion, on August 2, 2013, and made his debut the following day against Cheltenham Town.

However, his loan was terminated on August 17 when Sunderland recalled him, despite Jordan Pickford appearing only three times for Burton. On September 13, Jordan Pickford returned to Burton on loan. His loan term with Burton Albion was extended for another month due to his handful of first-team appearances.

Jordan Pickford was recalled by his original club after appearing in 13 games over his two loan stays. Between 23 November 2013 and 18 January 2014, he was an unused replacement on the bench as a cover for Vito Mannone.

Jordan Pickford joined League One team Carlisle United on a one-month loan on 8 February 2014, despite rumors that he will return on loan to Burton for the third time. He made his debut the following day in a 2–1 defeat against Gillingham.

Because of his form and a few first-team outings, the club decided to keep him on loan for the rest of the season. Jordan went on to make 18 appearances for Carlisle after extending his loan at the club. Pickford signed a four-year deal with Sunderland at the end of the 2013–14 season, keeping him at the club until 2018.

Jordan Pickford signed a season-long loan with League One team Bradford City on July 21, 2014. He made his debut on 9 August in a 3–2 win at Valley Parade against Coventry City, and preserved his first clean sheet in the next match, a 0–0 draw away at Walsall.

Jordan Pickford earned his first red card on 10 January 2015, when he was sent off in the 11th minute of a 2–1 loss against Rochdale. He served a one-game punishment for which his team did not file an appeal. He was sent off in the last minute of a 2–2 away tie against Port Vale on February 7th.

Following a two-game suspension, the club successfully appealed and had it revoked. Jordan Pickford established himself as a first-team goalkeeper for the most of the season until being recalled by his home club on March 9, 2015.

Jordan Pickford signed a season-long loan with Championship club Preston North End on July 31, 2015. On his debut, he kept a clean sheet in a 0-0 tie with Middlesbrough at Deepdale.

Further clean sheets in his second league outing, a 1–0 win against Milton Keynes Dons, and a 0–0 draw with Rotherham United on August 18 made it three clean sheets in his first three league appearances for the club.

Jordan Pickford earned another clean sheet in the League Cup on August 25th, as Preston defeated Premier League opponents Watford 1–0. On November 7, he equaled the club record with a sixth consecutive clean sheet in a 0–0 draw against QPR.

Jordan Pickford impressed senior goalkeeping colleague Chris Kirkland during his time at Preston. Jordan Pickford was controversially sent off in a 1–0 loss to Leeds United on December 20, 2015. He went out of his area to confront striker Chris Wood and was ruled to have touched the ball. Preston was successful in his appeal, citing replay evidence of the ball striking his chest.

Sunderland recalled Jordan Pickford on January 1, 2016, with the club battling in 19th position in the Premier League. He made his first-team debut against Arsenal in a 3–1 FA Cup defeat on January 9, 2016.

On 16 January 2016, he made his Premier League debut against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane, losing 4–1, making him the youngest player in England’s top five divisions at the age of 21. Pickford signed a new deal with Sunderland on January 26th, pledging his future to the club until 2020.

Jordan Pickford started the 2016–17 season as Vito Mannone’s backup. Jordan started Sunderland’s third league encounter of the season, away to Southampton, after Mannone sustained a significant arm injury in training.

Despite making numerous saves during the game, he committed a blunder in the 85th minute, allowing Jay Rodriguez to equalize for the hosts in a 1–1 tie. Jordan Pickford was named one of six players shortlisted for the PFA Young Player of the Year award on April 13, 2017.

Jordan Pickford signed a five-year contract with Premier League team Everton on June 15, 2017. The initial fee of £25 million, made him the third most expensive goalkeeper in history at the time. He also became the most expensive British goalkeeper of all time. This will make him Everton’s second most expensive signing ever. Gylfi Sigursson is currently the club’s most expensive signing with £40 million plus add-on payments.

Jordan Pickford made his league debut for Everton on August 12, 2017, against Stoke City at Goodison Park. He was selected Everton’s Player of the Season at the end of his debut season.

Pickford made a last-minute blunder against local rivals Liverpool on 2 December 2018, mishandling a shot from Virgil van Dijk, allowing Divock Origi to score the winning goal for Liverpool with a close-range header in the 96th minute.

Jordan Pickford conceded a penalty on 10 March 2019 against Newcastle United after misjudging a cross from Matt Ritchie and rugby tackling Salomón Rondón. He promptly made amends by stopping Ritchie’s penalty with his legs, and Everton extended their advantage a minute later.

Jordan Pickford was spotted smirking at Newcastle supporters in the Gallowgate end during the second half, as Rondón’s shot flew wide of the post. However, he surrendered three times after that, including parrying a shot into the path of Miguel Almirón.

On Match of the Day, Ian Wright said that Jordan Pickford should have concentrated more on his game and not allow his emotions to impact him because he was a former Sunderland player. Jordan Pickford was allegedly seen getting into a fight in April 2019; police indicated they would look into it.

Jordan Pickford remained Everton’s first-choice goalkeeper, appearing in 38 Premier League games and recording 13 clean sheets. However, he battled with form and made multiple mistakes.

His record of four mistakes leading to goals was the most of any Premier League keeper. Only Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga stopped fewer shots than Jordan Pickford. He fared significantly better in the EFL Cup, when he was part of a squad that advanced to the competition’s Quarter-Finals, saving a penalty from Leicester City’s James Maddison.

However, it was insufficient, as Leicester advanced after the penalty shoot-out. Pickford was once again Everton’s first choice goalkeeper, and he was part of a team that won its first four games for the first time since the 1969–70 season.

He was chastised in the first Merseyside derby of the season for his foul on Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, which resulted in Van Dijk being replaced after six minutes with what turned out to be a season-ending ACL injury. Richarlison was sent off for a late challenge on Thiago Alcantara, and captain Jordan Henderson had a game-winning goal ruled out for offside by VAR.
