Jimmy Smits is an actor from the United States. He is most known for his roles as prosecutor Victor Sifuentes in L.A. Law, Matt Santos on The West Wing, and NYPD Detective Bobby Simone on NYPD Blue, as well as appearances ADA Miguel Prado in Dexter. Smits also starred in Switch and My Family.  He also featured in the Star War sequel trilogy as well as Rogue One, where he played Bail Organa.

Jimmy Smits rose to prominence after starring in the television series L.A. Law, for which he won an Emmy Award. Smits appeared in a number of films, but it wasn’t until he returned to television in the rugged police drama NYPD Blue that he found new success. Since then, Smits has featured on programs including The West Wing and Sons of Anarchy.

Smits was born in the neighborhood of Brooklyn, in the state of New York. Cornelis Leendert Smits, Smits’ father, was born in Paramaribo, Suriname, and was of Dutch heritage. Emilina Smits, Smits’ mother, was born in Peuelas, Puerto Rico. He grew up in a working-class area with his two sisters, Diana and Yvonne.

He moved to Puerto Rico when he was ten years old and lived there for a few years. He had never spoken Spanish before that. Attending a Spanish-only school was traumatizing and difficult for Smith.

Smits grew up in a conservative Roman Catholic household. He considers himself Puerto Rican and travels to the island regularly.

In his teens, Smits was an active sportsman. Smits completed his schooling at Thomas Jefferson High School, Brooklyn. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Brooklyn College in 1980 then went on to graduate from Cornell University with a Master’s in Fine Arts in 1982.

Smits made his big-screen debut as a drug trafficker in Running Scared in 1986. He discovered his place on television later that year when he was cast as attorney Victor Sifuentes on the weekly show L.A. Law. In 1993, Smits was given the main part in the thriller NYPD Blue.
