Club Career
Birmingham City
Cheltenham Town loan
- Butland joined League Two club Cheltenham Town on loan for a month after making his England under-21 debut in September 2011 to get first-team experience.
- On 10 September 2011, he made his Football League debut at home against Macclesfield Town, replacing Scott Brown, who had previously made 107 consecutive starts for the club. Butland had little part in Cheltenham’s 2-0 victory.
- Butland signed a new deal with Birmingham, which will expire in June 2015, while still on loan.
- The initial month was then extended by two months, to begin upon his return from under-21 service in mid-October.
First-team breakthrough
- Butland came off the bench in the final few games of Birmingham’s 2011-12 season, which saw the club reach the play-off semi-finals.
- Birmingham was said to have turned down a £6 million deal for the midfielder from Southampton, who had just been promoted to the Premier League.
- Manager Lee Clark made it plain that selling him would need a “crazy” offer.
- Butland said that he desired regular first-team action for the next season, and after Ben Foster left for West Bromwich Albion during the close season, he was assigned squad number one for 2012-13.
- Three days after making his full England debut, he finally played his first competitive match for Birmingham.
Stoke City
- On January 31, 2013, Butland signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with Premier League team Stoke City.
- As part of the transaction, he was loaned back to Birmingham City for the rest of the season.
- According to Stoke, the sum was initially £3.3 million and later increased to £3.5 million.
- When he returned to Stoke for the 2013-14 season, he was the third choice behind Asmir Begovi and Thomas Srensen, and he joined Championship club Barnsley on a three-month emergency loan on September 26.
- With Barnsley’s only other fit goalkeeper an inexperienced 19-year-old, Butland moved straight into the starting eleven for their following encounter, a 2-1 defeat against Leicester City in which he pulled down Jamie Vardy to allow a penalty and may have been fortunate.
Crystal Palace
- Butland signed a three-year deal with Premier League team Crystal Palace on 16 October 2020 for an unknown fee, reported by BBC Sport as £1 million.
International Career
Great Britain Olympic
- Butland was nominated to Stuart Pearce’s 18-man Great Britain team for the London Olympics in 2012.
- He was only picked when the FA granted him special permission after deciding that no players from England’s Euro 2012 team would be eligible for selection.
- On 20 July, he came on as a half-time replacement in a pre-Games friendly against Brazil, and the Telegraph reported that “only three excellent late stops from Jack Butland stopped the result from being more emphatic” as Great Britain lost 2-0.
- Butland started all of Britain’s group games at the tournament, conceding two goals in a 1-1 draw with Senegal and a 3-1 triumph against the United Arab Emirates.
England senior team
- Butland, who had been nominated as one of five standby players for England’s UEFA Euro 2012 team, was brought into the squad on May 25 after John Ruddy fractured his finger in training.
- He made no appearances but was included in Roy Hodgson’s experimental team for the opening friendly of the 2012-13 season, against Italy on 15 August in Bern.
- After Joe Hart withdrew from the team due to a back ailment, Butland was picked to the starting eleven, making him the youngest England international goalkeeper in history aged 19 years 158 days; the previous youngest, Billy Moon, was 64 days older when he first played for England in 1888.
- Butland surrendered once, to a header from a corner by Daniele De Rossi.
