Club Career
Early Career
Gueye, who was raised in Senegal at the Diambars football academy founded by Patrick Vieira and Bernard Lama, was born in Dakar. In August 2008, he signed with Lille, a French team. In the 2010–11 season, when the squad won Ligue 1, he made his debut for the first team, appearing in 11 games.
He also began the 2011 Coupe de France Final victory over Paris Saint–Germain. His first league goal came on October 5, 2013, in a 3-0 victory over Ajaccio at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy. His first goal occurred on February 17, 2011, in a 2-2 home draw with PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Europa League last 32 first leg. On April 21, 2012, during a 2-0 victory against Dijon, he was dismissed.
Aston Villa
Gueye paid a transfer fee of £9 million to join English Premier League team Aston Villa on July 10, 2015. He earned his debut in a 1-0 away win over AFC Bournemouth on August 8.
Gueye’s first and only goal for Villa came in a 2-0 victory over Wycombe Wanderers on January 19, 2016, in the replay of the third round of the FA Cup. Gueye played in 35 league games for Villa all before the team was demoted from the Premier League at the end of the campaign.
Everton
Gueye’s release clause, estimated to be worth £7.1 million, was activated by Everton on August 2, 2016, when Aston Villa had been demoted from the Premier League. Everton then signed Gueye on a four-year deal. Over the course of the 2016 calendar year, he made the most successful tackles and interceptions per game in the top five leagues in Europe.
On February 25, 2017, Gueye scored his first league goal for Everton in a 2-0 victory over Sunderland at Goodison Park. In the 2016–17 season, he won 100 tackles, becoming him the first player in Europe’s top five divisions to do so.
On August 17, 2017, Gueye scored his first goal for Everton in a European match against Hajduk Split in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League play-off round.
On October 22, after a 5-2 loss to Arsenal at home, he was dismissed. He extended his deal with Everton in February 2018 to keep him there through 2022.
Everton turned down a bid for Gueye from French club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in January 2019. However, Gueye’s performances were unaffected by the PSG rumors, as evidenced by the fact that he and Lucas Digne shared the club’s Player of the Year title for the 2018–19 campaign.
Paris Saint-Germain
Gueye agreed to a £30 million contract with Ligue 1 club PSG on July 30. On August 25, he made his debut against Toulouse in a 4-0 triumph. He put on a “great” performance on September 18 as his team defeated Real Madrid 3-0 in the UEFA Champions League. On October 5, he scored his first goal for PSG in a 4-0 victory over Anger.
Gueye won a domestic treble in his first season in Paris, finished runner-up in the Champions League, and was on the bench for the final defeat to Bayern Munich. The team won the Coupe de France in his second season and advanced to the semifinals of the Champions League before falling to Manchester City.
Gueye made his comeback to European football in a 2-0 victory against the same opponent on September 28, 2021, after serving a two-match Champions League suspension for receiving a red card in the first leg of the semi-final against Manchester City in April 2021. He received the Player of the Match honor for scoring the game’s first goal, which was also his first goal in the Champions League.
International Career
On November 11, 2011, in a 4-1 friendly victory over Guinea, Gueye made his debut for Senegal as a halftime replacement for Deme N’Diaye. He competed for the squad at the 2012 Olympics, but he suffered an injury during the first match against the hosts, Great Britain, right before the half. He was chosen for the 2015 and 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
In the 3-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea on June 9, 2017, Gueye scored his first goal for his country, capping the qualifying for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. He was included in Senegal’s 23-man World Cup roster for Russia 2018. He scored the lone goal in the finalists’ quarterfinal victory over Benin at the 2019 African Finals in Egypt.
