Hope Amelia Solo was an American professional soccer goalkeeper who played for her country’s national team from 2000 until August 2016. She holds the record for most career shutouts in the US. She is one of the best female goalkeepers of all time. She wrote a paper at age 12 in which she expressed her desire to become a professional soccer player, though the option wasn’t really available to women back then. When she was in high school, she played forward, but when she went to college, she switched to goalkeeping.

Before being inducted into the senior squad, she played for the US junior team. She has played for many clubs in multiple women’s soccer leagues in the US and abroad, including the Philadelphia Charge, Kopparbergs/Göteborg, Saint Louis Athletica, and Seattle Reign FC, and was instrumental to America’s win of two Olympic gold medals and a World Cup. Her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy and she competed on ABC’s reality show ‘Dancing with the Stars’ in the 13th season.

Born on July 30, 1981, in Richland, Washington, Hope Amelia Solo is the daughter of Italian-American Vietnam War veteran Jeffrey Solo and Judy Lynn (née Shaw). She has three siblings, a half-sister, Teresa, and two brothers, Dave and Marcus.

Her parents divorced when she was six years old. A year later, her father took her and Marcus to Seattle where they lived out of a hotel for several days. A vacation that looked like fun for seven-year-old Hope turned into an alleged kidnapping when Jeffrey was arrested by the police, and the children were returned to their mother.

When she was a forward at Richland High School, she scored 109 goals and led her team to three back-to-back league titles from 1996 to 1998, as well as a state championship win in 1998. Solo also played soccer for the ‘Three Rivers Soccer Club’ in the Tri-Cities during her school days.

After Hope and Jerramy welcomed twins Lozen and Vittorio on March 4, 2020, one of the couple’s five Doberman Pinschers, Conan, passed away after being shot.
