Francisco Calvo Early Life
Franciso Calvo, a citizen of Costa Rica, was born to Dona Fressy on July 8, 1992, in San Jose. The San Jose native joined the Deportivo Saprissa junior team of Costa Rica because he had a childhood interest in football.
Following his stint at Saprissa, he relocated to the US and enrolled at San Jacinto College, where in 2010 he played for the San Jacinto Coyotes.

Club Career
2011 saw Calvo return to Costa Rica and play for Herediano before moving on to Pérez Zeledón, where he amassed 5 goals in 21 games. He relocated overseas in January 2013 to play for Nordsjaelland, the reigning Danish champions. But he went back to Herediano in the summer of 2013. Calvo became a loan to Santos de Guápiles in January 2015.
Francisco joined Saprissa in late May. He played in 39 games and contributed five goals during his debut season with Saprissa. He remained a danger from set pieces the next season, scoring 9 goals in 24 games while defending. On December 27, 2016, Calvo signed with Minnesota United FC of Major League Soccer.
Calvo was chosen as an MLS All-Star in 2018, making him the first Minnesota United player in team history to do so. Calvo was transferred to the Chicago Fire on May 3, 2019. Chicago rejected Calvo’s contract option after the 2021 campaign. Calvo joined the San Jose Earthquakes as a free agent on January 26, 2022.
Calvo helped a ten-man San Jose club rescue a 3-3 tie at home against the Columbus Crew on March 5, 2022, by scoring two late set-piece goals. He was included in the MLS Team of the Week as a result of his performance. He is currently playing for Konyaspor in the Turkish Super League.
International Career
He made his senior team debut with Costa Rica on May 29, 2011, when they played Nigeria in a friendly in San José. Additionally, he competed for Costa Rica in the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia.
He received a reserve call-up for the Costa Rican team at the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup and then won a call-up for the Costa Rican team in the 2011 Copa América after impressing senior head coach Ricardo La Volpe. He made his tournament debut in a match against Colombia, which finished in a defeat of 0-1 and a victory of 2-0 over Bolivia.
Francisco also played Argentina, losing 3-0. He was included in the 23-man roster for Costa Rica’s World Cup team in May 2018.
