Hill completed a year in junior college after finishing high school in 1986 prior to actually relocating to Nashville, Tennessee, to explore her passion for music.

Hill started her career as a receptionist at a music publishing firm in Nashville before becoming a fan item packer for Reba McEntire. During the early 1980s, she married music industry executive and composer Daniel Hill.

Hill’s professional breakthrough came when a Warner / Reprise scout discovered her singing backup for Gary Burr in the Bluebird Café, a prominent Nashville pub. A great deal of acclaim was received for her debut album, Take Me As I Am, released in 1993.

Her debut album’s first single Wild One made No. 1 on the Billboard country music chart for four weeks. The album’s third single, a cover of Janis Joplin’s I’ll Be There For You, debuted at No. 2, staying there for four weeks.

Hill’s meteoric climb to country success was accompanied by a lot of turmoil in her private life. She started looking for her biological mother in 1990 and finally found her in 1993.

Hill has chosen to stay anonymous in order to preserve her biological mother’s anonymity, although she has maintained touch with her. Her relationship with Daniel Hill, on the other hand, ended in divorce in 1994. Later she married Tim McGraw in 1996.
