Early Years

Fabian Frei, who was born in Frauenfeld, began his football career with FC Frauenfeld and FC Winterthur, but he rose through the ranks with FC Basel. He won the Swiss U-16 and U-18 championships with Basel.

During the 2006-07 season, Frei was a member of the U-21 squad and performed so well that he was offered a professional contract. Frei was invited into the first team squad ahead of the 2007-08 season because he was one of the top midfielders in the U-21 side.

Fabian Frei made his first team debut on July 22, 2007, in a 1-0 home win over FC Zürich. In the 2007-08 season, he was instrumental in Basel’s title and cup victory.

On 4 December 2008, he scored his first goal for the club in Basel’s 3-1 win against FC Aarau at the St. Jakob-Park Stadium. Frei made his Europa League debut as a substitute against SV Mattersburg on Thursday, August 16, 2007. 2011-2014

He was recalled to Basel, the reigning Swiss champions, for the start of the 2011-12 Swiss Super League season, where he quickly earned a starting spot. Frei scored his first Champions League goal for Basel on 14 September 2011 in a 2-1 home win over Oţelul Galaţi in Group C.

His second goal came on 27 September in a 3-3 draw at Old Trafford against Manchester United. While his third goal came on 22 November in the Arena Națională, Bucharest, as Basel won the away game against Oţelul Galaţi 3-2. Frei won the Double, the League Championship, and the Swiss Cup with Basel at the end of the 2011-12 season.

Frei won the Swiss Super League Championship and finished second in the Swiss Cup alongside Basel at the end of the 2012-13 season. Basel proceeded to the semi-finals of the 2012-13 UEFA Europa League, where they were placed against reigning UEFA Champions League champions Chelsea, but they were knocked out, losing both home and away ties, defeated 2-5 on aggregate.

Fabian Frei earned his fourth Super League title with Basel at the end of the 2013-14 season. They also reached the final of the Swiss Cup in 2013-14, but were defeated 2-0 in extra time by Zürich. During the 2013-14 Champions League season, Basel advanced to the group stage and finished third.
