El Alfa Early Life
El Alfa, also known as Emanuel Herrera Batista, was born on December 18, 1990. He was born and reared in the Dominican Republic’s Bajos de Haina. In Bajos de Haina, life was not easy. El Alfa had been exposed to harsh manual labour since he was a child. Not only that, but his entire family worked in blue-collar jobs, which was the norm for men in his area. El Alfa, on the other hand, was always convinced that he was destined for something greater.
El Alfa began reciting Spanish church tunes at family gatherings as soon as he could walk and talk. His ability to shift pitches astounded his relatives, and it’s a skill he’s still known for today! He also sang in the local church choir whenever he had the opportunity.
El Alfa, unfortunately, did not excel at school. He would frequently skip school to hang out with his friends and compete in rap battles with the locals. He was obviously much more passionate about music. Although his parents opposed his decision, they encouraged him to keep working. When he was seventeen, El Alfa left his home in retribution and attempted to pursue a career in Latin rap music.

El Alfa Career
El Alfa became self-sufficient at the age of 17 after a childhood in which he aspired to be a barber. To establish a name for himself, he formed a partnership with Dominican Dembow singer Eddy Wilson in 2008, after becoming self-sufficient himself on the scene.
They released street-style dembow songs like El Fogon and Conmigo No during their brief time together. The group disbanded in 2009, with both members opting to pursue separate careers.
In 2011, he had some success with two songs, No Wiri Wiri and Agarrate Que Te Solté, which were published in the last few months of the year. But it was in 2012, when he released Cacao, Con To’ Lo’ Cascabeles, and Muevete Jevi, that El Alfa finally established himself as a rising talent in the region. The latter would go on to become one of his most popular tracks, with over 3 million Spotify streams in recent years.
Batista’s debut solo release was Coche Bomba in 2009, a song that caused ripples in the Dominican Urban scene at the time, establishing him as an up-and-coming artist known as El Alfa El Jefe in the Dominican Republic. In 2010, he followed up on that breakthrough with Coco Mordan, another song that combined his high-pitched voice with a hard-hitting tempo.
When El Alfa released Fuin Fuan in April 2013, he kept his style of high-paced dembow with a touch of DJ Patio’s beats, his popularity skyrocketed. In that same year, he also secured significant collaborations, performing Humo Excsame with Musicologo The Libro and T Me Gusta Pila with Puerto Rican musician Farruko. El Alfa El Jefe’s career would be shaped by the latter collaboration for years to come.
In the early 2010s, his music’s success catapulted him into regional stardom, as he began to record with Puerto Rico’s Reggaeton industry’s Jowell & Randy, Nicky Jam, Tempo, and Arcángel. His dominance on the local scene, however, was threatened by a number of rivals, the most infamous of whom was El Mayor Clasico, with whom he had a bitter feud. After gaining control of a big amount of the street dembow genre in 2014, they began competing at parties and clubs, battling it out with diss tracks.
El Alfa sent a strong message to the dembow community that he is here to stay when El Mayor was on the receiving end of No Te Panike, a dembow style diss track that was forceful yet catchy, in a twist to his typical comedic side. El Mayor would respond a week later with his own diss tune Ratrero, escalating the antagonism between them as the genre grew in popularity.

El Alfa, who had no intention of stopping there, went on to record Tarzan, his biggest song to date. The song, which recounts his sexual experiences with a woman who screams like Tarzan, catapulted him to fame and attracted the attention of some of Puerto Rico’s biggest singers, including Nicky Jam. Tarzan was included on El Alfa’s second album, Dembow Exitos 2.0, which largely followed the same style as the first. Once again, Bubloy and DJ Plano collaborated on the record, but it was Nico Clinico’s contributions that let El Alfa shine and advance through the ranks.
El Alfa Controversy
El Alfa was sentenced to 15 days of community service in 2015 after getting backlash for disparaging the Dominican Republic’s founding fathers in a song video. Cesar Romero, the President of El Instituto Duartino, has called for a boycott of El Alfa’s records and their destruction since the band has disrespected the founding fathers. El Alfa’s sentence included cleaning the Plaza de la Bandera and singing the national song for two hours every day for fifteen days.
El Alfa was also ordered to distribute educational leaflets about the founding fathers at Santo Domingo traffic lights. He saw the event as a miscommunication. This didn’t stop El Alfa from making a name for himself in the music industry, as collaborations with a number of Dominican singers in the same year – Don Miguelo, Shelow Shaq, Quimico Ultra Mega, El Mega, Nfasis, and El Super Nuevo – allowed him to continue climbing the ranks of the genre.
The song Pal de Velitas featuring Mark B, produced by Chael Produciendo, was the year’s biggest hit, with over 20 million views on Youtube. El Alfa’s staff would keep this up-and-coming producer on board for the foreseeable future.
No Hay Forma and Segueta ft. Nicky Jam were two of Chael’s singles for El Alfa in 2016. El Alfa began to shine with him in a Dembow sub-genre known as TrapBow, which combines American trap and Dembow. It first appeared in El Alfa’s solo hit Banda De Camion. El Alfa’s first verse was 24 bars long, which was a new level for him. This song drew attention from Latin American fans and paved the way for future collaborations between the Puerto Rican and Dominican urban music scenes.
Before the end of the year, he recorded Nadie Como T with Nicky Jam and Una Papi Que La Mima with Tempo and Farruko. El Alfa and Chael had begun to establish a new level of popularity for urban Dominican artists, with El Alfa touring Europe for the first time in 2016 following a successful 2015 in the United States.
