Eiji Kawashima Early Life

Since he idolised Sergio Goycochea and watched a video of his performance, which moved him, Kawashima, who was born in Yono, Saitama, Japan, started playing football and transitioned to the goalie position. He later enrolled at Urawa Higashi High School and Yononishi Junior High School.

There is an elder brother and sister for Kawashima.

Club Career

Early Career

After completing his high school education at Urawa Higashi, Kawashima began his professional career at Omiya Ardija in the J2 League. He made his Omiya Ardija debut on April 6, 2002. Throughout his three-year stint, he continued to play for the team, making 41 appearances. Kawashima had a tryout with Serie A team Parma while playing for Omiya Ardija.

Kawashima joined Nagoya Grampus Eight in the J1 League of Japan in 2004. He was the club’s backup goalkeeper for three seasons, competing against seasoned veteran Seigo Narazaki. Occasionally, Kawashima was given an opportunity to play for the first team because Narazaki was injured. Kawashima, though, had injury concerns of his own after suffering a hand injury at the conclusion of the season and missing several weeks of action.

Kawasaki Frontale

Kawashima had been signed by Kawasaki Frontale for a transfer price of 150 million yen, it was revealed on December 29, 2006. The transfer was at the time the most expensive for a J.League player. In the season’s first game, a 1-0 victory over Kashima Antlers, Kawashima made his Kawasaki Frontale debut as a starter and recorded a shutout.

He then defeated Arema 3-1 to make his AFC Champions League debut. He quickly won admiration for his performances after becoming the starter in goal. Kawasaki Frontale won their group that year and went on to become the first Japanese team to earn a spot in the 2007 AFC Champions League.

Lierse

Kawashima finished his transition to Europe after taking part in the 2010 World Cup by signing up with Lierse S.K. in the Belgian Pro League. He entered into a two-year contract with the club, with the possibility of an extension. “After seeing the World Cup, I decided that the only way I can grow better is by putting myself in a more competitive atmosphere,” Kawashima said of the decision.

Dundee United

In order to recruit Kawashima, the Scottish Premiership team Dundee United submitted a UK work visa application in November 2015. On December 29, once the work permit had been obtained, the signature was officially verified. Manager Mixu Paatelainen called Kawashima’s signing a “great coup” at the time.

On January 2, 2016, he made his club debut against Dundee, a rival city team, losing 2-1. When Kawashima was at fault for giving up easy goals, his play was criticized. Nevertheless, he was successful in keeping three clean sheets, one each against Ross County, St. Johnstone, and Hamilton Academical. However, the team was demoted after dropping 2-1 to Dundee once more on May 2, 2016.

Metz

Kawashima joined Metz of Ligue 1 on August 2. Kawashima did not make the starting lineup for the first two months of the season, instead making appearances on the substitute bench and backing up Thomas Didillon for most of the year.

On January 8, 2017, RC Lens was eliminated from the Coupe de France, and he played the entire 90 minutes against them. On April 18, 2017, he made his league debut for FC Metz in a 3-2 loss to Paris Saint-Germain. He was instrumental in a 1-1 draw against Toulouse on May 15, 2017, saving a penalty and making several noteworthy saves.
