Personal Life
According to the New York Times, her father, Dumisani Dlamini, is a nationally acclaimed South African artist best remembered for his performance as Crocodile in the original Broadway musical Sarafina! and the accompanying 1992 film adaptation. Deborah Sawyer, her mother, is a Jewish-American graphic artist, and she has a 4-year-old brother named Raman Dlamini.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Amala claims to have had a strained connection with her father and has stated many times that she has never met him. Amala has always enjoyed dancing and acquired Bharatanatyam, a classical Indian dance technique, during her stay at the ashram. She moved on to breakdancing after leaving the ashram and as a result of her maturation.
Despite the fact that Amala has not publicly stated her sexual orientation, it is widely assumed that she is queer or at the very least bisexual, based on her statement in an interview with Pride that “you can kinda have sex with anybody,” and the fact that her song Naked contains sexual innuendos about her being bisexual.
Following her meteoric rise to fame, Doja has taken a cautious approach to social media. Using her Twitter account, she actively campaigns for international leaders to address Africa’s “devastating food issue.” She’s also partnered with Poshmark recently, unveiling a handpicked range of items that are in accordance with her own taste. Doja even posted 13 personal things for sale on the platform, with all earnings going to the Musicians On Call charity.

Doja Cat Career
Doja released a number of singles after being discovered on Soundcloud and signing a record deal with Kemosabe and RCA Records. She was also briefly signed by OG Maco’s label, OGG. As she explained in an interview with Rolling Stone, she finally took a break due to writer’s block and what she believed was a creative limbo.
Following that little absence, Doja released her first major commercial single, “Roll with Us,” in February 2018.
The following month, she released “Go to Town,” the lead song off her upcoming debut album, and “Candy,” the album’s second single, which went on to become a sleeper success when it was used as the music for a viral dance competition on TikTok in 2019. This boosted Doja’s career, as the song went on to chart in Australia, Canada, and the United States, where it peaked at 86 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving her her first solo entry on the list.
Doja’s self-titled first album, Amala, was released on March 30, 2018 through RCA and Kemosabe Records. However, critics mainly overlooked and dismissed it, and it failed to chart in any market. Doja stated in a Rolling Stones interview that she was compelled to finish the song’s production without any help from the label and that she was under the influence of marijuana for most of the time she was recording this album.
Doja rose to fame later that year when her self-released, homemade music video for “Mooo!” (a novelty song about fantasising about being a cow with absurdist lyrics) went viral and turned her into a meme. The popularity of “Mooo!” has “irrefutably shown” to her record labels that she was an immensely marketable talent, according to The Verge, which also noted the success of “Mooo!” kickstarted her career anew following the fairly forgettable debut album. As she claimed in her Rolling Stones interview, this resulted in labels paying greater attention to her.
She went on to release a lot more albums and singles.
At the 63rd Grammy Awards, Doja was nominated for Best New Artist, and “Say So” was nominated for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. In the same year, she was included in Time’s 100 Next List, which featured 100 of the world’s most promising young people.
Doja has also appeared as a guest performer in the second season of the TV show Dave and is presently a Pepsi brand ambassador, featuring in a commercial for the soda company in which she does a contemporary interpretation of “You’re the One That I Want” from the musical picture Grease. Doja finished 2021 as the fourth best-selling female artist overall and the best-selling female R&B and hip-hop artist in the United States, according to Billboard. Doja appeared in Taco Bell’s Super Bowl LVI commercial.
She is also active on Twitter, having over 5 million followers as of June 2022, in addition to TikTok and Instagram. She presently has 10.5 million YouTube subscribers and over 24 million TikTok followers.
