Club Career
Paços de Ferreira
Jota, a Porto native from Massarelos, joined Paços de Ferreira’s youth program in 2013 after moving from Gondomar. He was promoted to the starting lineup at the beginning of the 2014–15 campaign, and on October 19, 2014, he started his senior debut for the Taça de Portugal in a 4-0 home victory against Atlético de Reguengos.
On February 20, 2015, Jota made his Premier League debut, replacing Diogo Rosado late in a 2-2 home tie with Vitória de Guimares.
On May 17, he scored his first goals in the tournament, scoring a brace in a 3-2 victory against Académica de Coimbra at home, becoming the club’s youngest player to score in the top division in the process.
Atlético Madrid
Jota and Atlético Madrid reached a five-year contract on March 14 of this year, which will start on July 1. But on August 26, 2016, he went back to his own country and signed a one-year loan with FC Porto.
On October 1, Jota scored a hat-trick in the first half to lead his team to a 4-0 victory over Nacional. Jota competed in the 2016–17 UEFA Champions League and netted his first goal there on December 7 in a 5-0 home win over Leicester City.
Wolverhampton Wanderers
Jota made a season-long loan transfer to Wolverhampton Wanderers of the English Championship on July 25, 2017. On August 15, he scored his first goal in a 3-2 road victory over Hull City.
A permanent agreement with Jota, reportedly worth €14 million, was said to have been reached on January 30, 2018, and it went into force on July 1.
He helped Wolves win promotion to the Premier League in his first season, scoring a career-high 17 league goals while finishing fifth in the league’s top scorer charts. Due to English Football League rules, he had to wear his legal surname on his jersey in the Championship but was able to change it to “Diogo J” after the accomplishment.
