Diogo Meireles da Costa ComM, a goalkeeper for Porto of the Primeira Liga and the Portugal national team, was born on September 19, 1999. Costa, a product of Porto’s junior program, made an impression while playing for the reserve team and won the UEFA Youth League in 2019. He was promoted to the first team in 2019, winning the Taça de Portugal and the Primeira Liga in his first campaign. In 2021, at the age of 22, he made his starting debut for Porto and helped the club to a second domestic double while being selected to the Primeira Liga Team of the Year.

2011–2021: Youth career and reserves

  • Costa moved to Santo Tirso at the age of 7 after being born to Portuguese parents in Rothrist, Canton of Aargau.
  • He transferred from Casa do Benfica de Póvoa de Lanhoso to the FC Porto academy in 2011.

2014–2021: Youth career

  • Throughout Portugal’s 2016 UEFA European Under-17 Championship campaign, Costa started every game.
  • He helped his country win the event for the sixth time in the final against Spain by saving Manu Morlanes’ penalty kick in a 5-4 penalty shootout victory following a 1-1 draw.
