Early life
Delonte West was born on July 26, 1983, in Washington, D.C., to Dmitri and Delphina West. Delonte’s childhood wasn’t exactly perfect because he grew up in poverty. While his parents divorced when he was a child, he and his family were forced to move to a low-income neighbourhood. The 6 feet 4-inch guard’s two siblings, Dmitri West Jr. and Danielle West, were raised by their single mother.
Even though they were poor, many described their childhood as “happy-poor.” Delonte had a tough start in life because he was diagnosed with mental illness at a young age. Since he was born a mixed child with red hair and other distinctive characteristics, he had been routinely mocked by the neighbourhood youngsters.
His love and enthusiasm for basketball were the only things that kept him going despite the tumult at home. He began skipping school since he couldn’t play after a leg injury when he was 12 years old. Delonte became sad as a result of the incidents, and at the age of 14, he tried suicide several times, prompting him to frequent the hospital.
Delonte should live with his father, Delphina, a single mother who was concerned and troubled by her son’s actions. Delonte’s father, on the other hand, was unconcerned about his son’s predicament, and things only became worse when he met a group of guys at his new school who led him down the path of drugs and crime.
Family
Delonte Maurice West was born in Washington, D.C., to mother Delphina Addison and father Dmitri West on June 16, 1983.
Dmitri West Jr. is his brother, while Daniella West is his sister. West claims that he spent his childhood doing drugs, self-harming, and spending the majority of his time in hospitals.

Personal Life
West has defined his upbringing as “happy-poor,” claiming that he lived with numerous relatives. West claims that he used narcotics, self-harmed, and spent time in children’s hospitals during his adolescence.
With African American, Piscataway Native American, and White American ancestors, the West is a mixed community. In 2008, West was diagnosed with bipolar illness. He originally accepted the diagnosis, but then challenged it, claiming that his problems were caused by a combination of transient depression and the stresses of being a basketball player.
Crime And Controversies
While riding a Can-Am Spyder three-wheeled motorcycle on September 17, 2009, West was pulled over for a traffic offence. West was discovered with a 9mm Beretta pistol in his waistband, a Ruger.357 Magnum revolver strapped to his knee, and a Remington 870 shotgun in a guitar case over his back during this stop. He was then detained, and on November 20, he appeared in court.
West claimed that he was relocating the guns because his mother alerted him that his cousins’ children had discovered them in a cupboard at his residence. West was sentenced to electronic monitoring, unsupervised probation, 40 hours of community service, and psychological counselling after pleading guilty to the driving and weapons counts.

Delonte West Education
High School
West attended Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Maryland, where he was a standout basketball player, joining up with future NBA star Eddie Basden. He guided the Roosevelt Raiders to their first appearance in the state tournament.
Delonte got 22 points and 8 rebounds in the Maryland 4A championship game, but the Raiders lost 70–58. With averages of 20.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 3.1 steals per game, he was voted Washington Post All-Met Basketball Player of the Year.
College Education
West, along with John R. Wooden Award and Naismith Award winner Jameer Nelson, established what was largely regarded as the best backcourt in the country at Saint Joseph’s University.
West averaged 18.9 points and 6.7 assists per game as a junior, while shooting 41% from three-point range. [requires citation] His performances helped the 2003–04 Saint Joseph’s Hawks go 27–0 in the regular season and reach the NCAA Tournament’s Elite Eight. Saint Joseph’s concluded with a 30–2 record.
Professional Career
After his junior season, West chose to leave St. Joseph’s after being taken as the 24th selection in the 2004 NBA draught by the Boston Celtics. He suffered from injuries in his rookie season, appearing in just 39 games and largely coming off the bench. He scored 4.5 points per game, grabbed 1.7 rebounds, and dished out 1.6 assists. West was appointed the starting point guard by head coach Doc Rivers at the start of the 2005–06 season after making the move to point guard in his rookie season.
West averaged 11.8 points per game, 4.1 rebounds per game, and 4.6 assists per game in 2005–06. He was picked to the Celtics’ sophomore team for the Rookie Challenge at NBA All-Star Weekend on February 12, 2006. Coincidentally, he replaced his college teammate Jameer Nelson, who withdrew because of injuries.
In the 2006–07 season, West was shifted to the shooting guard position, although he struggled early in the season. Later, he was reassigned to the position of the point guard. On November 8, 2006, West hit a game-winning buzzer-beater against the Charlotte Bobcats, and on March 3, 2007, he hit a game-tying three-pointer with 4 seconds left in regulation to force overtime against the New Jersey Nets.
The Celtics would eventually defeat the Nets in the contest. West scored a career-high 31 points and converted a career-high 12 free throws in a double-overtime Celtics victory the next day against the Minnesota Timberwolves. In the game, West scored all 31 of his points in the second half and two overtimes. He was splitting starting minutes with Rajon Rondo at the close of the 2006–07 season.
Delonte West Net Worth
He has a modest net worth of $2000. Delonte’s story is one of the saddest and most heinous examples of a career-ending injury. The idea that West’s net worth dropped from $16 million to $2,000 in such a short period is unsettling. While with the Boston Celtics, West earned the most money in his career while playing against LeBron James with the Cleveland Cavaliers, earning $9.8 million.
Throughout his eight-year basketball career, he earned $1.5 million each season. As of 2019, he was earning $1.223 million per year. West and his wife lived in a million-dollar estate with many pools, bedrooms, and a spectacular view of the Potomac River. Despite the opulent façade, the interior presentation was completely different.
West was having financial difficulties and couldn’t afford his living expenses, so he sold a few items to raise some cash. Before applying for a job at Home Depot in 2011, he worked at a furniture company.
