WWE Career
Bautista began wrestling professionally in 1999 after attending the Wild Samoan Training Center wrestling school. While he quickly entered professional wrestling, he eventually returned to Muay Thai, Eskrima, and Jiu-Jitsu training. In terms of the latter, he received his training from Cesar Gracie.
While Bautista joined with the WWF in 2000, he began his career with Ohio Valley Wrestling. He was fighting under the alias “Leviathan” at the time. He was unbeaten in his first few fights until losing to Kane and Steve Austin. Before being promoted to WWE’s main roster, he won the OVW Heavyweight Title.
Bautista did not participate in a WWE-televised event until 2002. He changed his stage name to “Deacon Batista” at this moment. Bautista used to team up with D-Von and win a lot of fights. Bautista eventually betrayed D-Von, resulting in a long enmity.
He joined Evolution alongside Ric Flair in 2003. Evolution would go on to become an incredibly successful team, winning several championships throughout the years. The Evolution alliance eventually got strained as Triple H perceived Bautista as a danger.
Bautista won the World Heavyweight Title at WrestleMania 21 after turning on Evolution teammates. The event drew over 1.09 million PPV purchases, an accomplishment credited partly to Bautista’s popularity among fans.
The tenure as World Heavyweight Champion that followed was the longest in history, lasting 282 days. Finally, a reoccurring triceps injury prompted him to withdraw from the tournament. David Bautista’s only MMA bout was against Vince Lucero in 2010. Bautista won the first round via Knockout.
Despite the fact that his arm required surgery, he returned to WWE to compete for the championship once again. In the years that followed, he won and lost the title several times, while he battled arm ailments. He notably exploited this to his advantage when he employed a phony arm vice to fool Randy Orton into letting down his guard.
As he continued to battle for the following few years, Bautista’s injuries began to catch up with him. He genuinely compressed his L1 spine after a bout against John Cena and subsequently appeared in a wheelchair.
Bautista began to be booed by crowds beginning in 2013. This resulted in a steady decline, culminating in Bautista’s departure from WWE. While Bautista stated publicly that he left because Triple H refused to give him a shot at the belt, the actual reason for the separation was due to “creative issues” behind closed doors. Having said that, Bautista did finally return to WWE in 2018, making a farewell appearance against Triple H before retiring completely in 2019.
