Club Career
Early Career
The oldest child of nurse Quinta Djata, Pereira was born in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, and his family relocated to Portugal when he was five years old. Three teams in the Lisbon region were where he played youth football before completing his development at Benfica.
After Benfica made the decision not to offer Pereira a professional contract, Parma in Italy was able to sign him for free.
After spending the second half of the 2010–2011 campaign on loan with the Greek team Aris, he returned to the Stadio Ennio Tardini and made his Serie A debut on December 21, 2011, entering as a late substitute in a 3–3 home draw with Catania.
Marítimo
Pereira signed with Martimo and flew back to Portugal on August 1st, 2013. He made his Primeira Liga debut 17 days later in a 2-1 home triumph over his old team Benfica, and on December 19 in the 2-2 home tie with Braga, he scored his first goal. Throughout the season, he made 32 competitive appearances for his side, which helped them finish sixth and only miss out on the UEFA Europa League.
On May 29, 2015, Pereira played his farewell game for the Madeirans, losing 2-1 against Benfica in the Taça da Liga final.
Porto
The largest transaction in Martimo’s history, Pereira and Porto agreed to a four-year deal on July 2, 2015, for a transfer price of €4.5 million and a buyout clause of €40 million. He finished as runner-up in his debut year with a career-high six goals from 33 games. He was awarded Porto’s footballer of the year in October 2016 after taking home the “Drago de Ouro” honor.
In September 2017 and December 2017, Pereira won the award for a midfielder of the month in the Primeira Liga. On January 24, 2018, while playing for Sporting CP in the League Cup, he sustained a calf injury that required several months of recovery
Paris Saint-Germain
Pereira signed a one-year loan agreement with Paris Saint-Germain on October 5, 2020, for a reported sum of €4 million, with a conditional option to purchase for €16 million at the conclusion of the season.
15 days later, he made his UEFA Champions League debut in a 2-1 home loss to Manchester United in the group stage. That same month, he made his Ligue 1 debut as a central defender in the 4-0 demolition of Dijon at the Parc des Princes. On February 27, 2021, in the rematch with the latter opponent, he headed in a corner cross for his first goal (same score).
International Career
Pereira made the decision to represent Portugal abroad. He played in all seven of his team’s games (six were completed) and scored in the 2-0 semifinal victory against France while competing for the under-20 team that placed second at the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia.
On March 31, 2015, Pereira made his senior international debut, taking up for fellow rookie Bernardo Silva after 62 minutes of a 0-2 friendly loss to Cape Verde at Estoril. Fernando Santos, the manager of the team, also chose him for the UEFA Euro 2016 squad, and he scored his first goal in the final exhibition match, a 7-0 triumph against Estonia in Lisbon on June 8.
