Life Journey

Blake, Daniel Michael Day-Lewis was born in London on 29th April 1957. His father was Cecil Day-Lewis, a prominent poet, and Jill Balcon. Daniel hails from a family of artistic people.

Day-Lewis father Cecil and maternal grandpa Sir Michael Balcon were both honored with English Heritage blue plaques for their contributions to British literature and film. Every year, the BAFTA for Outstanding Contribution to British Cinema is given in memory of his grandfather Balcon’s honor.

Day-Lewis’ parents sent him to the exclusive Sevenoaks School in Kent as a boarder in 1968 because his behavior was too uncontrollable. He was exposed to his three main hobbies in school, carpentry, acting, and fishing.

Nevertheless, his dislike for the school developed, and after two years at Sevenoaks, he got relocated to Bedales in Petersfield, Hampshire, a private school. His sister already was a student there, and the atmosphere was more laid-back and creative.

At the age of 14, he made his cinematic debut in Sunday Bloody Sunday, in which he portrayed an uncredited vandal. He eventually applied to a theatrical school. He was admitted into the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and immediately immersed himself in the art of acting. Day-Lewis earned a tiny film role in Gandhi after years at the Bristol Old Vic and many stage performances in 1982.

For many years, he continued to perform in films and plays, developing into one of the most accomplished actors in the industry. Day-Lewis gradually became a professional actor, committing himself to get into character physically, mentally, and emotionally for every performance.

For most of the early 1980s, Daniel Day-Lewis alternated between theatre and cinema, entering the Royal Shakespeare Company as well as starring with Anthony Hopkins and Sir Laurence Olivier in the 1984 picture The Bounty.

With his famous appearance in A Room with a View in 1986, gradually Day-Lewis’ career began to take off. In 1987, he featured alongside Juliette Binoche in The Unbearable Lightness of Being, which was his first major role. Day-Lewis studied Czech to prepare for the part, and he kept in the role for the whole eight-month production.

In 1992, Day-Lewis featured in the American film The Last of the Mohicans, which was based on a novel. Day-Lewis’ character studies for this picture were well-publicized, with reports that he went through intense weight training and trained to survive off the land and woods where his role resided, camped, hunted, and fished. To be in character, he kept a long gun with him at all times throughout filming.

In the 1990s, Daniel had a successful career and starred in many films. Day-Lewis abruptly relocated to Italy to work as a shoemaker’s apprentice, essentially shutting himself off from the spotlight.

In 2002, he returned to the big screen for a critically acclaimed portrayal as Bill the Butcher in Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York. For his performance as the knife-wielding thug, Day-Lewis received another Oscar nomination and a BAFTA for best actor.
