Cristian Gamboa Club Career
Gamboa was born in the Costa Rican province of Liberia. At the age of 15, he was declared ineligible to play for Costa Rican clubs Saprissa and Alajuelense. He spent the 2006-2007 season with his native club Municipal Liberia. He then went abroad, joining Norwegian club Fredrikstad in the summer of 2010, where he stayed for two partial seasons until joining Copenhagen in the summer of 2011.
He made his UEFA Europa League debut in a 0-1 defeat to Standard Liège. Gamboa signed a three-month loan contract with Rosenborg in August 2012, with the Norwegian club having the option to buy.
On 3 September 2012, he made his Tippeligaen debut, winning 2-0 away at Stabaek. By November, he had pleased Rosenborg enough in the 10 games he had played in for them to give him a permanent contract, and he signed a five-year contract with the club. West Bromwich Albion agreed to sign Gamboa in late July 2014 for a sum speculated in the media to be about £2 million.
Because the player did not have enough recent international appearances for a work visa to be issued automatically, the transaction was contingent on a successful appeal to the Football Association, which was confirmed on August 5. The athlete agreed to a three-year deal.
On August 26, 2014, he made his debut as a second-half replacement in a League Cup match against Oxford United. He made his League debut a few days later against Swansea City, and he has since made many substitute appearances. Gamboa eventually made his league debut on October 4th, in a 2-1 loss away to Liverpool.
Despite his defeat, he was said to have had an outstanding performance. It was Gamboa’s lone league start that season, and he fell even more out of favour when manager Alan Irvine was fired in December and replaced by Tony Pulis. Gamboa only played one minute of first-team football from January 2015 to the conclusion of the season, coming in as an injury-time replacement in a fifth-round FA Cup fixture against West Ham in February 2015.
Gamboa struggled to maintain his first-team spot in his second season in England, appearing in only two games at the start of the season. He subsequently went five months without appearing for the first team before returning in February 2016 in an FA Cup fourth round replay against Peterborough United.
Gamboa signed a three-year contract with Scottish Premiership team Celtic on August 30, 2016. Gamboa signed a two-year contract with VfL Bochum on August 27, 2019.
Cristian Gamboa International Career
He represented Costa Rica in the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup, when they finished fourth. He has previously represented Costa Rica in international competitions.
He earned his Costa Rica national team debut in a friendly match against Argentina in January 2010. Gamboa’s first goal came in a 7-0 home triumph over Guyana in a 2014 World Cup qualifier. He was chosen for the Costa Rica national team to compete in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and he appeared in all five games, helping them reach the quarterfinals before being eliminated on penalties by the Netherlands.
He was included to Costa Rica’s 23-man team for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia in May 2018.
